BASIC INFORMATION<br />

Ballarat Health Services is the major provider of<br />

hospital and healthcare services in Western Victoria.<br />

Ballarat Health Services was formed in 1997 through<br />

the merger of the Base Hospital (acute medical,<br />

surgical, obstetric, paediatric, critical care and<br />

emergency services), Queen Elizabeth Centre (aged<br />

care, rehabilitation and palliative care) and Grampians<br />

Psychiatric Services (acute, aged and community<br />

psychiatric services).<br />

Ballarat Health Services provides services to a<br />

regional population of 200,000 people. Located in the<br />

historic provincial city of Ballarat, just an 80 minute<br />

drive from Melbourne; Ballarat Health Services<br />

provides excellent hospital training and experience,<br />

superb lifestyle and exciting career options.<br />

REASONS TO APPLY<br />

Ballarat Health Services is comprised of approx.370<br />

acute beds (including 8 ICU/CCU beds, 23 ED beds, 3<br />

resuscitation bays, and 67 acute mental health beds),<br />

and 525 residential care and rehabilitation beds. It<br />

can be a bit colder than average in Ballarat, but the<br />

city offers great lifestyle opportunities, and living is<br />

cheaper than in the metropolitan areas.<br />

Interns receive an intensive orientation program.<br />

Weekly intern training (protected time) takes place<br />

under the auspices of the SIT and guided by the<br />

Australian Curriculum Framework for Junior Doctors.<br />

All interns receive BLS training early in the intern year.<br />

HMO Training is a combination of formal lectures<br />

(including regular Grand Round presentations),<br />

bedside teaching, unit-specific teaching (M&M<br />

meetings, pathology and radiology meetings,<br />

multidisciplinary meetings) and online resources<br />

BASIC INFORMATION<br />

Barwon Health is the largest Regional Health Service<br />

provider in Victoria. It offers an extensive range<br />

of general and specialist hospital, rehabilitation,<br />

residential and community services to the Geelong<br />

community and an increasing number of residents<br />

across the Barwon South-Western region. Barwon<br />

Health has over 1,000 beds, a budget in excess of<br />

$800 million and a workforce of just over 7,000 staff.<br />

Barwon Health University Hospital Geelong is a 488<br />

acute bed teaching hospital affiliated with The Deakin<br />

University Medical School. This is inclusive of 32 Acute<br />

Mental Health beds, obstetrics, and paediatrics. There<br />

are Professorial Departments of Medicine, Surgery<br />

and Psychiatry. The Hospital positions are accredited<br />

for basic and many advanced training programs.<br />

REASONS TO APPLY<br />

Barwon Health is a fantastic place to commence and<br />

further a doctor’s career. It is one of Australia’s leaders<br />

in acute pain. It also has one of the busiest EDs with<br />

over 78,000 patients through the front door annually. In<br />

Emergency, interns have opportunities to consolidate<br />

clinical skills and reasoning essential in acute care.<br />

Surgical departments are deeply involved in research<br />

with opportunities for junior doctors to become<br />

involved with their own projects in these departments<br />

and publish studies. There are opportunities for<br />

interns and residents to visit network training sites in<br />

Southwestern Victoria, giving them occasion to travel<br />

and experience areas serviced by Barwon Health.<br />
