BASIC INFORMATION<br />

Blacktown Mount Druitt Hospital, a member of the<br />

Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD), is<br />

a culturally diverse leading tertiary care hospital,<br />

renowned internationally for excellence in patient care,<br />

training of health care professionals, research and<br />

innovation. The hospital is committed to providing the<br />

highest quality of health care to the people we serve<br />

in a compassionate and respectful manner.<br />

Blacktown Mount Druitt hospital works in a unique<br />

partnership to provide health care to residents in the<br />

Blacktown LGA. Each year, across the Blacktown and<br />

Mount Druitt Hospital Campuses there is treatment of<br />

more than 85000 people in Emergency Department,<br />

care of approximately 31,400 patients staying at least<br />

one night in hospital, performance of 9900 surgical<br />

procedures, provision of 214000 outpatient services<br />

and assistance with the birth of more than 3,700<br />

babies.<br />

The second stage of the Expansion Project was<br />

completed in mid-2019 and includes expanded<br />

capacity for emergency, intensive care, theatres and<br />

women’s & children’s health. These state-of-the-art<br />

facilities together with the growth into a major teaching<br />

hospital, will transition Blacktown and Mount Druitt<br />

into one of the largest and digitally enabled public<br />

hospital in NSW, and one of the nation’s leading health<br />

facilities. Our new facilities and services consist of:<br />

• New emergency department with more<br />

emergency and short stay beds and a new<br />

psychiatric emergency care service and<br />

dedicated unit in Emergency<br />

• New 24 bed intensive care unit<br />

• Eight new operating theatres and space for<br />

future expansion<br />

• New purpose-built wards for expanded birthing<br />

(with a wellness model of care), maternity,<br />

women’s health, and newborn care<br />

• New paediatric service with dedicated<br />

emergency department facilities, day stay and<br />

inpatient facilities<br />

• Medical imaging, sterilising and non-clinical<br />

support services expansion<br />

• Contemporary new activity-based workspaces<br />

for support staff<br />

• Expanded haemodialysis unit for hospital<br />

inpatients<br />

REASONS TO APPLY<br />

Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospital is big enough<br />

to provide Junior Medical Officers with all the training<br />

and exposure they need for progression into specialty<br />

careers while retaining the personal touch of care<br />

about each JMO that comes with being a growing<br />

hospital.<br />

There is a highly motivated Prevocational Training and<br />

Workforce team that over the past year have provided<br />

everything from Advanced Life Saving courses, a<br />

new one on one direct mentoring program that links<br />

a consultant with every intern to guide their career<br />

choices, to onsite wellbeing massages! From an<br />

education perspective, weekly teaching sessions are<br />

provided by consultants, video-conferenced between<br />

the campuses and are strictly protected as teaching<br />

time – no pagers! There are also weekly grand rounds<br />

and departmental clinical meetings. Blacktown Mt<br />

Druitt Hospital also has a strong affiliation with<br />

Western Sydney University and the opportunity to<br />

be involved with teaching and mentoring of medical<br />

students including conjoint appointments. Blacktown<br />

Hospital can offer the rotations required for entry<br />

into all specialty training programs, including the<br />

Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Paediatrics required<br />

for General Practice training.<br />

Amenities include childcare on both campuses that<br />

gives preference to staff. Facilities for Resident<br />

Medical Officers include a separate JMO common<br />

room and JMO office, with locker facilities and access<br />

to the ED and WSU library. There is also an active<br />

RMO Association that organises social activities and<br />

advocates for JMOs.<br />

Blacktown and Mount Druitt are accredited for training<br />

for most specialties and is networked with Westmead<br />

Hospital for Surgical Skills Training, Basic Physician<br />

Training, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Emergency<br />

Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine, Anaesthetics and<br />

Mental Health. Highly sought after rotations have<br />

also been established for Critical Care and vocational<br />

General Practice. Blacktown Mt Druitt is a major<br />

teaching hospital for the Western Sydney University<br />

School of Medicine. This partnership provides<br />

opportunities to join a thriving teaching community<br />

as a conjoint appointment, as well as access to an<br />

active, clinical research network with a multitude of<br />

research opportunities.<br />
