7. INTERN SQUAD: Make an intern group chat and help each other out
You’ll need support on the wards and having a place to ask dumb questions about minor intern tasks will make
your life so much easier.
8. LIVE LIFE: Keep in touch with your supports
Organise a regular catch up or call with your friends, partner, other interns and family. It’s easy to get overwhelmed
and lose touch, but the effort is worth it, it’ll do wonders for your mental health as well as strengthening your
relationships. Make plans to do things outside of work - medicine is your job not your life though it may not feel
that way.
Summary & COVID-19
Internship is as hard but great. And the more involved you are in medical school the better prepared you will
be. My years getting amongst it [Read: Medsoc, Convention and especially SPUDS] both socially and more
constructively have left me with an incredible network of friends across Australia years above and below me
on the hospital ladder.
I can ask these various legends for advice, vent to them, and always rely on them – and that has made my
years at medical school & the start of my career some of the best years of my life.
So get amongst it. Everything. It’s worth it.
PS. COVID sucks, but social isolation is only physical, it’s a great chance to keep in touch with your distant
friends. It’s been awesome video chatting to all my SPUDS/AMSA mates, be it just a check in chat or an
massive organised national meeting for beers & banter. Check in with your friends to make sure they are doing
ok in this hard time!
PPS. Always happy to help out if you have questions, email me at egarrettgp@gmail.com
