Concord Repatriation General Hospital is a principal<br />

referral facility and a teaching hospital of the<br />

University of Sydney. We offer a comprehensive<br />

range of specialty and sub-specialty services, many<br />

recognised nationally and internationally as centres<br />

of excellence.<br />

Furthermore, the hospital is linked to Concord Centre<br />

for Mental Health is on site. Redevelopment Stage 1<br />

of the new Concord Hospital is currently underway<br />

with a planned opening late 2021.<br />

CANTERBURY HOSPITAL<br />

Canterbury Hospital is an acute general metropolitan<br />

district hospital situated 12 km south of Concord<br />

Hospital and 15 km SW of the GPO. It is part of the<br />

Sydney Local Health District, which comprises of<br />

Balmain, Canterbury, Concord, Concord Centre for<br />

Mental Health, Royal Prince Alfred and the Sydney<br />

Dental Hospitals. Canterbury Hospital services a<br />

population of 230,000 with two-thirds speaking a<br />

language other than English as its first language.<br />

The main language groups are Greek, Italian, Arabic,<br />

Vietnamese, Chinese, Bengali and Korean. More<br />

recently, a significant number of refugees and<br />

humanitarian entrants have come from Burma,<br />

Nepal, Sierra Leone, Iraq, Pakistan, and Sudan.<br />

community. Broken Hill is a self-reliant, strong<br />

regional community with services and facilities to<br />

support an active, vibrant resident population. The<br />

community values and shares the region’s unique<br />

natural and built environment with regional, national<br />

and international visitors. The lack of traffic and daily<br />

commuting mean you’ll find hours in the day you<br />

forgot existed, which usually see’s people’s social<br />

lives blossom.<br />

The Far West LHD provides a solid start to any medical<br />

professional’s career. The size and workforce profile<br />

ensures that junior doctors, and particularly interns<br />

have access to consultant staff that is unattainable<br />

in large metropolitan settings. The breadth of work<br />

ensures that you’ll gain exposure to a diverse range<br />

of clinical presentations, with the support to allow you<br />

to quickly develop your clinical skills and confidence.<br />

The Far West LHD is committed to developing a career<br />

path for rural generalists, as well as providing future<br />

specialists comprehensive grounding to support<br />

their future careers. This approach is a collaborative<br />

effort involving the LHD, Broken Hill university<br />

Department of Rural Health, the Royal Flying Doctor<br />

Service, Maari Ma Health Aboriginal Corporation and<br />

Far West Medicare Local.<br />

Opening in 1929 with 28 beds, it underwent<br />

redevelopment in 1998 and its 200 beds covers the<br />

broad scope of emergency medicine, general medicine<br />

and surgery, ENT surgery, urology, orthopaedics, hand<br />

surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics,<br />

anaesthetics, high dependency, psychiatry, drug<br />

and alcohol, aged care and rehabilitation and some<br />

outpatient clinics. It is supported by a Hospital in the<br />

Home Service.<br />

Despite its size, Canterbury Hospital plays an integral<br />

role within the local community in the provision of<br />

acute care medicine, with its Emergency Department<br />

attending to over 46,000 presentations in the<br />

2018-2019 year. Canterbury Hospital also plays a<br />

significant role in the delivery of maternal services,<br />

with a significantly higher fertility rate than NSW<br />

overall. However, women within its catchment tend<br />

to present later for antenatal care and together with<br />

a lower levels of vaccination, suggest that an overall<br />

poorer maternal health profile.<br />

BROKEN HILL HEALTH SERVICE<br />

Part of Far West LHD, Broken Hill, also known as<br />

The Silver City, is a great place to live. It has a rich<br />

and colourful history and is renowned for its art and<br />

creativity, beautiful weather and outback lifestyle.<br />

You will find Broken Hill particularly friendly and<br />

welcoming, with a strong sense of family and<br />

Concord is the first teaching hospital to receive 5<br />

years back-to-back Accreditation Awards, as well<br />

as three consecutive 3 year Accreditation Awards<br />

from the NSW HETI for the exemplary training of<br />

postgraduate doctors. The network also includes<br />

the Broken Hill Health Service and allows on-call<br />

duties with RFDS. There is also a strong Consultant<br />

support network; they are all very approachable<br />

and the atmosphere is one of support. Consultants<br />

trained at Concord are also more aware of JMO<br />

training issues and needs, hence adding to this<br />

supportive atmosphere.<br />

The current DPET Dr Probal Roy (Cardiologist) was<br />

a Concord intern. The current Director of Medical<br />

Education – Dr Robert Russo and chair of the<br />

NCPTC (Network Clinical Prevocational Training<br />

Committee) was recruited to Concord in his RMO1<br />

year and remains as the HOD in Nuclear Medicine<br />

and Rheumatologist. Prof Lewis Chan still retains<br />

a role as the Chair of the General Clinical Training<br />

Council for the network; in 2014, he was the<br />

recipient of the AMA/ASMOF Supervisor of the Year.<br />

Additionally, Jean Mah-Collins (JMO Manager) was<br />

co-recipient of the AMA/ ASMOF JMO Manager of<br />

the Year in 2015. Lastly, the network training sites all<br />

work in sync with each other and the administrative<br />

unit support is considered extremely helpful and<br />

supportive.
