THE INNER STUDIO
feel the warmth of the sand on your feet as you walk along the
beach. As you near the water’s edge, you begin to enjoy the soothing,
rhythmic sound of the waves. Standing where the surf and sand
meet you can feel your feet cooled by the smooth waves as they pull
sand from around your feet. Take a moment to enjoy the sensations
on the beach....
6. Now continue to feel comfortable as that fantasy fades and imagine
you are walking home on a bright winter’s day, down a country road.
Your body is warm inside your thick winter coat, and you can clearly
see your breath with each exhalation. In the distance there is a house
with smoke rising from the chimney. A black crow is calling out
through the bright winter air. When you reach your house, you climb
three steps and stand at the wooden door where you can smell the
aroma of coffee.
7. Now imagine yourself in the country walking through the forest on
a beautiful summer day. The path is well-marked, and the air is
refreshing. Sunlight pours through the forest canopy, lighting wild
mushrooms and flowers near the path. This is a peaceful place. You
see a clearing in the distance and you decide to sit there on an old
log. The place feels very alive and you feel very connected to nature.
Centered... grounded...and confident. Notice how your body feels.
Breathing normally, imagine a peaceful light radiating from inside
you. Just let that feeling radiate outward until it fills your whole body.
8. Now let this fantasy fade. Return to this room, and let yourself take
a few deep breaths. When you are ready, stretch and become alert.
Take a moment to remember your experiences and begin to write
out the important or noteworthy moments. Take as much time as
you need to record your experiences. And when you have finished
writing, discuss the experiences with a friend.
This exercise takes you through an experience of imagining using your
five senses. It can help you to discover your particular gifts of imagination.
We all have our favorite way to imagine things–some of us are
more attuned to seeing things, for others the sense of touch or sound or
smell may dominate. There are no right or wrong visualizations. Were
the colors you imagined vivid or were you more able to hear church
