MR. VIOLETTE: Mr. Chaplain, ladies and gentlemen, it ~ is really a pleasure and
honor for me to .be here today and .to help in tryicg to ,begin this convention--which
will be a great pleasure to all or you, no doubt, i joined the rite Chiefs. of New Hamp,
shire in 1948. I have atter.ded as many meetings as I possibly could, and I want to assure
you that all the meetings I attended I enjoyed thoroughly. I think you ought
to ,be congratulated; (1) to iorm an organization which has .been successful for so many
years, and (2), in getting together and talking over the problems which yc.u may have
in your own vicinity.
The idea of organizing, itself, I believe, is a point of accomplishment when you can
sit down in, the same profession and be a.ble to iron .out some of the problems and find
the answers.
You ought to be congratulated, No. 3, in choosing this beautiful location, and
No. 4, making it pcssible for the ladies to be present. It is almost impossible to get along
with them, but what would we do without them? ’So you see, the men did have some
forethought in inviting the ladies, and I know the part you play in, this convention
will ,be as important as the firemen.
The firemen as a whole are too, often criticized for the work they try to do. Many
times they should ,be commended on their splendid work. The duties and work imposed
on them are not often, pleasant, ,but they have in the past done a wonderful job
and in the fire department in Portsmouth we have chcsen the best of men to protect our
property. This is a very important profession, because the people do appreciate a fire
departraent--especially if the fire concerns their property.
I think oftentimes, those of you who .belong to the fire department have received
letters of commendation and compliments from people themselves that you protected
their property. Maybe you brcke one or two windows which you shouldn’t, but I
want to wish you the best of luck. I hope this convention will be agreat success, an’d
we know you will en,joy yourselves here in Newcastle. The ladies, especially, we invite
to come over to Portsmouth and look around. Our streets are not too wide, but we will
try and make provisions so ycu can get by. Thank you very much. (Applause.)

CHIEF OUEVIN: Mr. President, Reverend Fathers, MaYor Butler, City Manager
Violette, I am very glad to be here this afterncon to officially ,bring you the greetings of
the Fire Chiefs CRib of New Hampshire. I am very proud that the members of the
New England Association of Fire Chiefs meet here in. our beautiful state of New
Hampshire. I hope you will have a pleasant stay with us.. I know you will all enjoy
the social, educational andi progressive work of our New Enqland Association. May this
convention be the most successful and may you come back here for many years to come.
I would like to take on this occasion the opportunity to. invite you to our Fire
College, to be hem in Newcastle on September 19th and 20th. (Applause.)
