small group, and any university, any big university, where you might find two, three,
four or five Communist tendencies, has dozens and scores of Professors who have
nothing to do with Communism, and want nothing to do with it, and would like to
fight it in the :best way they know how.
And, speaking of academic freedom, those who were-suffering academic restraint
are those who woul4 like to speak out against Communism. It isn’t popular, in some
circles, you know.
Well, what are these Professors concerned with? Are they concerned with the
truth, or are they concerned wit..h~ the John Dewey ph~ilosophy of pragmatism, so well
expressed by Justice Holmes, who said: "
"Truth is the majority vcte of that nation that can lick all others."
’On that basis, Communism could be called truth. Don’t the Professors know that
truth is not Communism? They say, of course, that they are for the under-go.g, and
they want to cure social ills.
Well, that doesn’t apply in this country. You can understand anybody from
Russia, or people whose roots go back to Russia, and whose traditions carry them back
to life under the Czars. When Czarism ended, and Communism took over, to those
people, anything was better than Czari.sm. They embraced Communism,. because they
lived under Czarism, and anything was an improvement.
However, that =situation never applied in this country. There never was that sort
of social ills. We have had no restraint on our freedom. 8o that I can’t understand
how they can talk about the under-dog. Those are the people who have some social
sympathies, like some of the Hollywood multi-millionaires, who send their chauffeurs
to throw brick,s.
Under Communist discipline, up to 1945, there were many things that occurred.
You need~ only the testimony of Herbert Philbrick, who is now being called an informer
instead .of a patriot, which he was, and anybody connected with the Department of
Justice or the F. B. I. can tell you that Herbert Phil.brick was a great patriot; he performed
a service never performed in the history of the country. He is known among
the Left-wing organization as an informer and a stool pigeon. He took his life in his
hand’s to inform the government of what was going on., in Communist circles. Those
people, especially on faculties, under Communist discipline, could not teach except as
the Party directed.
Is that to be doubted? ’~ .......
Well, here is what The Commuhist, the official theoretical magazine of the .Communist
Party in the United States, says:
"A people’s movement around the schools can thus transform the latter into
popular forms, for progressive social action, ultimately in the form of revolution.
Communist teachers are, therefore, faced~ with a tremendous social responsibility;
they must take advantage of their positions, without exposing themselves. Only
when teachers have really mastered Marxism and Leninism will they be able, skilfully,
to inject it into their teaching at the least risk of exposure."
That is from the official Communist Party Magazine. And, if you don’t think
they infiltrated into various other aspects of American life, as well as into the schools,
you ought to take a look at some of the text books that have been published by reputa:ble
publishing houses.
