PRESIDENT MOLLOY: Our next speaker is Chief Horace S. Jo~e of South Portland,
Maine, in ’"Response to Addresses of Welcome." ,Chief Jose. (Applause.)
CHIEF JosE: Mrl President, Reverend Clergy, officials of the State cf New Hampshire
and the City of Portsmouth, it is a pleasure to respond to these addresses of welcome.
I think this is our eighth convention at The Wentworth. Why d,o we keep
coming back? I think the answer is--a beautiful spot, the welcome we receive from
the people of New Hampshire, the hospitalities extended to us, particularly ,by Mr.
Smith and his a.ble staff, leave nothin,g to Ibe desired on our part.
I am sure that every Fire Chief knows, his part in his community. I am sure that
every Fire Chief knows the part that the fire services are going to play in the event a
disaster strikes in his community. Now each year we have new prc,blems, new me,
terial, new processes, new processes .of old material, new tire fighting equipment andlast
but not least--new firefighting techniques.
There is a fine list of speakers, men who are experts in their field, who are going
to address this conference. From the lectures, from the discussions and from roun&
ta,ble discussion,s some of your answers wilt be found. Now it .behooves every Fire
Chief to attend the sessions, take’part in the roun&ta.ble discussions, so he can go. back
home and give the benefit of them to the fire service.
So in. behalf .of the ’New England Association, I wish to extend to the City of
Portsmouth and the State of New Hampshire thanks for their welcome and hospitality,
and assure them that the Association is one to Ibe proud of. Thank you. (Applause.)

Presidents. I wish they would just rise and take a bow.

solemn phase of this entire conference--the Memorial Service for our ieparted members.
Please remain as quiet as possi’b!e and refrain f}om any applause or smoking.

mem~bers of the New England Association. of Fire Chiefs, and
WHEREAS: In their earthly life they served Him and His children diligently
and faithfully, and
