NEW ENGLAND ASSOCIATION OF FIRE CHIEFS publishing house is Angus Cameron, who has consistently refused to say whether he was or is a member of the Communi’st Party. During and right after the war, the~e were twenty-nine books published on China, and twenty-two of them were pro-Communist and seven were not. All twenty-two of the pro.Communist books were highly praised and recommended to readers in the Book Section of the New York Times, the New York Herald-Tribune, the Saturday Review of Literature, The Nation and-the New Republic; the seven anti-Communist books were all roundly condemned. All right. That is a little something in the past. So, what about 19~37 Well, 19~3 is the year that the United States has pretty well caught up with the Communists. Who caused that? Who was responsible for that? It was not the universities. It was not the book publishers. It was not the book ~eviewers. The press helped some. But, in the main, it was Congressional Investigating Committees. And, of course, that is McCarthyism. Senator McCarthy is one of the most controversial figures in America. I am not going to try to defend him, personally. I don’t know enough about him. I know something about him. I had lunch with him recently in Washington, and he caused! me tb wonder a little because his lunch consisted of these things, and in this order: A Martini, a ham sandwich, a glass of milk, another Martini, another ham sandwich, and another glass of milk. And yet, he seemed to hold up under it very well. I do know, also, and this is not generally known, that on many occasions when his Committee has talked to people in private to those they ,suspected of being Communists or of having once been a Communist, some of those fellows have said to Senator McCarthy: °’Look, I was a member; I got hooked, and I was a dope. I’m terribly sorry, and I’ll do anything under the sun that I can, to undo all of this." And, Senator McCarthy would say: "Forget it; we will never bring your name up." And I know that to be a fact. And yet, some people say that he goes around smearing innocent people. Who are they? I don’t know of one yet, who ha,s been smeared, who can call himself innocent to the point where he will clear himself by his own statement. You may remember that on a television show, a man by the name of Harrison Dilworth accused Senator McCarthy of smearing people and conducting investigations in secret session, and~ not giving them an opportunity to appear in public session. Senator McCarthy challenged him to name one, and he named one; however, Senator McCarthy proved that they had offered that man the opportunity to appear in public session. Senator McCarthy asked for an}" others in that category, and Dilworth said: "I will let you k~ow later." But he never got in touch with the Committee. And, I don’t know of a single one who has appeared before the Jenner Committee, or the un-American Activities ’Committee, who wasn’t given an opportunity to establish that he wasn’t a Communist, or, having been one, is no longer associated with the Party. After all, a great many of these things were developed and revealed long before Senator McCarthy got into the Senate. He achievedl prominence when he came in on the Lattimore case. Lattimore was the man who ran Amerasia. That was a magazine. 231
