Now it might notseem a lot to some people to receive a small gift like that from a :own, in Oklahoma, but the walnut tree .that this gavel and this. sounding board were made from grew on one of my farms in the State of Oklahoma, and so it does mean something to me, and I made one for each c,f the divisions of the International. Now I want .to speak just a minute or two on International activities. I know you Fire Chiefs are no different from what I am, and I would like to know if there is something going on worthwhile in" the International Association of Fire Chiefs. We have established several committees, there that are working on what I think are several important projects. We have one committee established on making a study of all the salaries paid Fire ,Chiefs in the United States and Canadal We have already prepared~ a report on that and put it out for releas.e, and it is available at the headquarters office ’by writing for it. We set up in that particular report the Fire Chiefs’ salaries of the various communities~nd recommend th~it Fire Chiefs .be paid n,0t less than a certain minimum, depending-enthe size of the ~city they represent. Thin that same committee is mXldng an’ addidonil stddy" at this time:of pension privilege~ of the Fife Chiefs throtighout the United States and Canada, to try to determine if in some way the Fire ’Chiefs of this Nation and Canada can increase the benefit pensions to Fire Chiefs. We established a committee to write and prepare a -fire-prevention guide for elementary schools.. IThat -has been prepared an&-is-on file and is available at the International Fire Chiefs’ Association in New York. The elementary teachers’ guide is the first ever developed in this country. We think that it is a fine document. We think it would be beneficial to every elementary s.chool in the Nation to have it. Now when we started on this we realized that none c.f us was competent to compile a fire-prevention guid’e that could be used in the schools, an.d so we went to the College of Southern California. There we got the curriculum division o.f that college to call in the various principals andi teachers from elementary schools in the City of Los Angeles. There we got together and compiled this information for International. It cost you fellows some money to do. it, but we thought it was a worthwhile project, and I definitely believe it is worthwhile to have in every elementary school in the country. We have another project on that which is dear to my heart, and I am sure to every Fire ,Chief. That is what we call a membership campaign. We started out at the ginning.o.f my administration to try and increase the membership in the International Association of Fire Chiefs. I myself have given one prize, which will be a top price of $100, and of course for second place a $~0 prize, and third place a $2~ prize. I d,idn’t a’sk the International Association of Fire Chiefs to appropriate this $100. I thcught it was something I could do--so I, myself, put up the $100 for the person that brings in the most members in any one division., and they don’t have to be a Fire Chief. They can be an associate member and get certain points for each member they ,bring in, and when reports are compiled in Toronto we are goin.g to give. thfee cash prizes..~. 89
