Campus Security Authorities<br />
You may also report crimes to other University officials who have been designated as additional<br />
Campus Security Authorities. Generally, any professional student affairs and housing staff<br />
members, student health clinic personnel, faculty advisors to student groups, and/or the athletic<br />
director and head coaches can receive a report for inclusion in the annual crime statistics and<br />
for the purposes of issuing a timely warning. <strong>The</strong>se additional campus security authorities may<br />
encourage and assist the victim in filing a report with University police. If you are the victim of<br />
a crime and you wish for your identity to remain confidential and desire no formal investigation,<br />
you must inform the CSA to whom you are reporting the event. If confidentiality has been<br />
requested, the listed university official receiving a crime report will gather sufficient information<br />
to allow the university to implement proper crime alerts, if warranted, and to include the<br />
information in the statistical records maintained by the University of South Alabama Police<br />
Department.<br />

University Police Department<br />
<strong>The</strong> University Police Department consists of a Chief, a Patrol Captain, an Administrative<br />
Captain, Investigative Lieutenant, Special Operations Lieutenant, three Sergeants, three<br />
Corporals, over 26 sworn Police Officers, and six Administrative personnel. All sworn officers<br />
have completed the Alabama Police Officers Standard Training Academy.<br />
University Police have full police powers granted by the State of Alabama (Code of Alabama,<br />
Title 16- 55- 10), including coextensive jurisdiction with the City of Mobile and the City of<br />
Fairhope. Police matters are handled within the department, including arrests, initial complaint<br />
taking, and criminal investigations. Crime reports are routinely submitted to State and Federal<br />
law enforcement, through the Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center and the U.S.<br />
Department of Education. Crime reports are submitted to local law enforcement as needed for<br />
cooperative or mutual investigative purposes.<br />
University Police Officers are authorized to be armed in order to protect themselves and others.<br />
In addition to the officers’ initial firearms training and qualifications, officers obtain additional<br />
training and qualifications by a certified firearms instructor at least once annually. For more<br />

In emergencies or at the request of University Police, Alabama State Law Enforcement Agencies,<br />
and/or local law enforcement agencies are contacted for assistance. <strong>The</strong>re is a reciprocal<br />
working relationship between the University, Local, State, and Federal Police Departments. On<br />
campus incidents of crime need to be reported to University Police, USA Health Security, or<br />
Fairhope Police for the USA Baldwin County Campus.<br />
