Est. 2007 Mercer Environmental Tourism<br />

The Mercer Environmental Tourism <strong>Charter</strong> <strong>School</strong> (METCS) provides<br />

students with multiple learning experiences in conservation,<br />

entrepreneurship, and integrating tourism development with environmentally<br />

sound practices. The courses offered will build leadership skills and provide<br />

career training experiences in vocational and professional fields that focus on<br />

local employment opportunities. Students enrolled in METCS will be<br />

working with 21st century technologies, including computers, ITV distance<br />

education technology, online classes and conferencing, personal and project<br />

website creations, simulations, research, and presentation software to create<br />

and communicate information required for various learning activities.<br />

Partnerships with community businesses and natural resource specialists will<br />

provide the hands-on experiences for the students. Each student will have an<br />

individualized plan for student learning designed by the student and METCS<br />

staff. Students will complete a portfolio that highlights projects and work<br />

experience situations.<br />

The Merrill Adult Diploma Academy educates 18-20 year old high school<br />

dropouts, Students may work with a teacher in small groups to meet<br />

common goals, independently online, online with teacher-led peer groups or<br />

in a more traditional manner with textbooks and workbooks. In addition to<br />

academic work in the core areas of English, mathematics, science and the<br />

social studies, students will receive small group instruction in various life<br />

skill areas including work readiness, technology, and AODA issues. A lead<br />

teacher/coordinator works with each student on an individual basis to<br />

develop an Individual Learning Plan that outlines the course of study needed<br />

to graduate. In addition to academic studies, students will also complete a<br />

work based component to help establish strong work skills and will be<br />

involved in a volunteer community service project.<br />
