Laurel High <strong>School</strong> is an alternative educational choice for high school<br />
students in grades 9-12. Enrollment is open to all high school students in<br />
Viroqua. The typical charter school student is a nontraditional learner who<br />
needs more challenge and active learning opportunities than are available in<br />
the regular high school. The staff looks to offer a secondary-level education<br />
program that is student-designed, learner-driven, and supported by a true<br />
collaborative community effort.<br />
The charter school’s overall mission is to offer self-motivated individuals<br />
new approaches to meet their academic and technical education needs; to<br />
challenge students to meet high standards of academic and social<br />
achievement and performance; to foster positive, respectful, and trusting<br />
relationships; and to ensure a successful transition to life after school through<br />
firsthand experience in goal setting, job seeking, job keeping, and technical<br />
college or university preparation.<br />
Est. 2000 Vernon County Better Futures High <strong>School</strong><br />
Vernon County Area Better Futures High <strong>School</strong> provides an alternative for<br />
students in grades 9-12 who are at risk of failing or dropping out of school<br />
because of difficulties integrating into traditional programs and meeting usual<br />
behavioral and academic expectations. The students have four main goals: (1)<br />
increasing academic achievement, (2) developing abilities to work with<br />
others, (3) increasing self-efficacy that is, the ability to attain goals set out for<br />
oneself, and (4) graduating from high school.<br />
Students have a variety of learning opportunities: small-group instruction,<br />
individual projects, Internet courses, correspondence courses, job shadowing,<br />
experiential learning, distance learning, and other educational opportunities<br />
developed by the student and teacher as needed to meet the goals in the<br />
independent learning plan. The school has modified hours of operation,<br />
Monday through Thursday from 11:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. This allows<br />
students time to complete the required community-based learning program<br />

Est. 2001 Harvey Philip Alternative <strong>Charter</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />
The Harvey Philip Alternative <strong>Charter</strong> <strong>School</strong> (HPACS) is an umbrella for<br />
grades 9-12 at-risk and high-risk students who are unable to be served<br />
appropriately at their regular high schools.<br />
The Native American based “Circle of Courage” philosophy, which is<br />
based on the belief that at-risk youth become disengaged from school or<br />
society because their circle is broken, meets students’ needs for belonging,<br />
mastery, independence, and generosity. The school meets these needs in the<br />
following ways:<br />
1. belonging, by constructive relationships with peers and staff<br />
2. mastery, by intense, focused, meaningful instruction in the core<br />
