Est. 2006 Merrill Elementary Healthy Living <strong>Charter</strong><br />

Merrill Elementary Healthy Living <strong>Charter</strong>, educating children in<br />

kindergarten through fifth grade, is an innovative approach to education that<br />

serves children emotionally, physically, and nutritionally, recognizing the<br />

impact of student well-being on academic success.<br />

To stress the importance of a physically active lifestyle our students are<br />

engaged in a minimum of 20 minutes of physical activity daily.<br />

Nutrition is a major component in our charter school. All children are<br />

served breakfast daily. A partnership with UW Oshkosh enables the school<br />

to enlist the support of nutritionists and nursing students to provide<br />

instruction to the students and their families on healthy food selection and<br />

preparation. Also, students are regularly introduced to new foods, especially<br />

fruits and vegetables, to expand their repertoire of food choices.<br />

Est. 2003 Oakwood Environmental Education <strong>Charter</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

The Oshkosh Area <strong>School</strong> District has created an environmentally focused<br />

charter school that targets fourth- and fifth-grade learners at Oakwood<br />

Elementary <strong>School</strong>. The Oakwood 4th and 5th Grade Environmental<br />

Education (EE) <strong>Charter</strong> <strong>School</strong> adopts an interdisciplinary approach to<br />

instruction that encourages hands-on, environmentally themed experiences to<br />

provide students with a better understanding of all core academic subjects, as<br />

well as an appreciation for and understanding of environmental conservation<br />

and protection. Enrollment was initially open to as many as 175 fourth- and<br />

fifth-grade students, who are held accountable to the same academic<br />

performance standards as other students. The Oakwood 4th and 5th Grade EE<br />

<strong>Charter</strong> <strong>School</strong> is intended to serve as a model for effective, comprehensive<br />

thematic study across all content areas in alternative settings using the<br />

environment as the integrated context.<br />

The Parkview <strong>Charter</strong> <strong>School</strong> serves at-risk students in grades 10-12. The<br />

charter school team includes students-dents, parents, regular and special<br />

education staff and administration, board of education members, law<br />

enforcement, human services, and community business members.<br />

The curriculum is delivered in a student-centered learning environment that<br />

meets the individual needs and interests of the students. The theory of<br />

multiple intelligences forms the basis of the charter school’s teaching<br />

methodology, accommodating different student learning styles and<br />

encouraging a lifelong love of learning. This collaborative model involves<br />

students, school, family, and employers who focus on shared responsibility<br />

for the students’ success.<br />

The school also aims to provide a safe, orderly, and healthy environment<br />

that allows students to achieve to their full potential. The focus is on<br />

prevention and intervention strategies that engage students in positive school,<br />

work, and community experiences.
