The airport is located just 17 kilometres southeast of the city centre and boasts excellent connections
by car or train. Inter-city, regional and local trains depart regularly to Cologne’s main railway
station. After approximately 14 minutes only, you can disembark against the magnificent backdrop
of the cathedral.
It is also possible to go by train from Cologne to two other important international airports in
less than an hour. Düsseldorf Airport is just 37 minutes away and Frankfurt am Main Airport is a
48-minute trip. Worth noting for exhibitors and visitors is the inter-city station Köln-Deutz, which
is located right by the trade fair ground. It is also easy to reach from all the airports mentioned.
Cologne has an extensive network of trams, buses and underground trains appreciated by 275
million passengers. However you can also discover Cologne easily on foot thanks to the limited
amount of traffic in the city. The trade fair site, shopping streets, the old town, the famous museums
and many venues lie within walking distance of the cathedral. Whether you want to stroll out
to a concert from your hotel or attend a business dinner after a cultural excursion, the short travel
times within Cologne are a pleasure.
With no less than four ports on the Rhine, Cologne is the second biggest inland port in Europe. Passenger
ferries, freight barges, rowing boats and pleasure steamers all contribute to the buzz of the
city, ensuring a truly unique atmosphere. Eight prominent Rhine bridges span the river. The city’s
residents and visitors alike adore the promenades along the Rhine – from the imposing cathedral
to the futuristic “crane houses” in the Rheinauhafen district. The city’s riverbank meadows and
Rhine floodplains are also popular with walkers and sportsmen and women. With its meanwhile
40,000 “love locks” (padlocks meant to ensure eternal love), the Hohenzollern Bridge has become
a real crowd-puller.
The Cologne Main Station is one of the most important railway centres on the continent. Trains
travel from Cologne to all major cities and urban centres in Germany and the rest of Europe. Several
high-speed connections, such as Cologne-Brussels-Paris-London or Cologne-Frankfurt-Stuttgart,
take travellers to their destinations in just a few hours – on the ICE, Thalys and Eurostar trains.
The red Thalys train travels from Cologne to Brussels Midi in 1 hour 48 minutes, and reaches Paris
North in just 3 hours 15 minutes. The ICE provides a direct connection to Amsterdam in 2 hours
37 minutes.
