Köln ist Wirtschaft und Medien
Cologne is a business and media hub
“Deutschland sucht den Superstar”, Germany’s answer to Pop Idol, is filmed in Cologne. So are
“Stern TV” and the ZDF-“Heute Show” (satirical view on the daily news). The question “Who wants
to be a millionaire?” is also answered here. A third of TV productions, TV films, daily soaps, game
and talk shows nationwide originate in Cologne. For lavish movie productions too, the Cathedral
city is often used as a preferred backdrop. Well-known films like “Amélie”, “The Miracle of Bern” and
“Stauffenberg” were co-produced in the Cologne region.
Cologne has developed into the most important media city in Germany. Cologne is home to seven
major television broadcasters and four radio stations. Among them are the private TV broadcaster
and current market leader RTL and the largest public broadcasting company WDR Westdeutscher
Rundfunk. Well over 55,000 people work in salaried or freelance positions in Cologne’s media
industry. The Rhineland metropolis also hosts numerous film festivals – from the Cinepänz festival
for children to the International Women’s Film Festival.
