<strong>Cologne</strong> is an academic and research centre<br />
For centuries, <strong>Cologne</strong> has played a leading role in the areas of academics and research. The city<br />
has renowned universities with internationally recognised departments, state-of-the-art research<br />
centres with scientists from around the world and clusters of excellence responsible for trailblazing<br />
work in areas like the life sciences. This makes the region one of the biggest and most innovative<br />
science regions in Germany and Europe. And the “First <strong>Cologne</strong> Science-Business Report”<br />
proves just how important science in <strong>Cologne</strong> is for the economy. The report was commissioned<br />
by the <strong>Cologne</strong> Science Panel of the consulting firm “The Boston Consulting Group” in cooperation<br />
with universities and research institutes. There is a particular emphasis on the issue of expertise:<br />
the medical and health sectors in particular make the Rhineland the strongest research region in<br />
North-Rhine Westphalia and have put <strong>Cologne</strong> amongst the top ten research locations in Germany.<br />
