Er ist das Wahrzeichen Kölns, ziert zahllose Postkarten, Bilder, Reiseführer-Titel und schenkt mit seiner Silhouette sogar Nudeln oder Plätzchen-Ausstechern ihre Form. Deutschlands offizieller Besuchermagnet Nummer eins ist der Kölner Dom. 1996 von der UNSECO zum Weltkulturerbe ernannt, beeindruckt die zweithöchste Kathedrale Europas mit ihren 157 m Höhe über sechs Millionen Besucher jährlich. Köln ist die Stadt der Kirchen. Innerhalb des Verlaufes der mittelalterlichen Stadtmauer sind zwölf große romanische Kirchen angeordnet. Eine Stadtführung mit den Geschichten über Kölns Kirchen ist äußerst spannend: Die Basilika von St. Andreas, in deren Krypta Alber- tus Magnus beigesetzt ist, war die Ersatzkirche für den zerstörten Dom nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. St. Maria im Kapitol ist auf den Fundamenten eines römischen Tempels errichtet. St. Pantaleon gehört zu den ältesten Sakralbauten in Köln. Seit mehr als 20 Jahren werden die faszinierenden Kirchenräume beim beliebten „Romanischen Sommer“ mit stimmungsvollen Konzerten belebt. Cologne Cathedral is Germany’s number one attraction, drawing over six million visitors each year. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. It is also Europe’s second tallest cathedral, with spires towering 157 m over the ground. Cologne is a city of churches. There are twelve large Romanic churches located within the area of town once defined by the mediaeval city wall. A city tour revealing the stories behind Cologne’s churches is truly thrilling: For example, St. Andreas Church was the substitute for the badly damaged Cologne Cathedral after World War II. The tomb of Saint Albert the Great is in the church’s crypt. St. Maria im Kapitol was built on the foundations of a Roman temple and St. Pantaleon is one of the oldest sacred buildings in Cologne.
