<strong>Cologne</strong> is known for its research activities in the areas of genetic and biotechnology. The Rhine<br />

meanders its way through North Rhine-Westphalia’s main biotechnology centre, connecting the three<br />

industry hubs Bonn – <strong>Cologne</strong> – Düsseldorf. Global players of this sector, like Bayer and Henkel are<br />

located here. It is one of around 90 members of the “BioRiver” association, which aims to network<br />

the region and promote transfer of knowledge and research.<br />

<strong>Cologne</strong> is a pioneer in new technologies – from TechnologiePark Köln on the left side of the Rhine<br />

to the Technology and Start-Up Centre (RTZ) – home to numerous young technology firms – on the<br />

right. Three Max Planck Institutes – for Plant Breeding Research (MPIZ), for Neurological Research<br />

(MPInF) and for the Study of Societies (MPIFG) – are already located in <strong>Cologne</strong>. A fourth centre for<br />

research on ageing is planned for mid-2012. The MPIZ is a leading international research institution<br />

in the area of molecular plant biology.<br />

The internationally renowned German Aerospace Center (DLR), based in <strong>Cologne</strong>, has its sights set<br />

high. Founded in 1907, it has been Germany’s research centre for aerospace, energy and transportation<br />

for over 100 years. The DLR is involved in a wide variety of areas, including the development<br />

of environmentally conscious technologies, the search for extraterrestrial life, the creation of new<br />

communication and security solutions as well as research on the solar system. With “envihab”, a<br />

worldwide unique aerospace medical research centre is currently being developed.<br />

The Odysseum in the Kalk district offers “edutainment”. Science and leisure park or Science Adventure:<br />

this gigantic, interactive world is setting new standards for an interested target group spanning<br />

all ages. People are invited to touch, shape and try their way through the seven different theme<br />

exhibitions spread out over the huge 5,500 m² space. At over 200 interactive stations, visitors can<br />

take their own personal educational journey from the beginnings of mankind to the future. The<br />

Odysseum is a very impressive location for events.<br />
