The driving force ensuring future viability and innovative expertise for the Cologne region and its
companies is science and its academic infrastructure. The quality of the training is thereby a significant
factor in the international competition: Cologne is home to 12 state and private colleges
and universities, which cooperate closely with established research institutes in the region – like
the German Aerospace Center (DLR), three Max Planck Institutes and the Jülich Research Centre.
The city also boasts the country’s only Academy of Media Arts and only German Sport University.
At over 620 years old, the University of Cologne is the second-oldest and largest university in Germany.
Today, more than 42.000 full-time students visit the lecture halls, laboratories, libraries and canteens
on campus. As a comprehensive university, the University of Cologne offers a classic range of degree
programmes, including maths, the natural sciences, humanities and medicine. The internationally
renowned Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences was the first of its kind in
Germany when established in 1919.
The German Sport University reflects the growing importance of sports in our society. Today,
Germany’s only university dedicated to the study of sports does more than just educate teachers.
Academic programmes train scientists, managers and communication specialists, providing them
with opportunities to research sports aesthetics, sports medicine, gender and sports, or conduct
studies on overweight children and youth. The Laboratory for Doping Analysis in the Institute for
Biochemistry works closely with the World Anti-Doping Agency in the fight against the use of performance-enhancing
drugs.
