KEITH <strong>of</strong> Troop, an old cadet, quartered the arms <strong>of</strong> Keith with azure, a garb<br />

between three falcons' heads or, as in Font's MS.<br />

KEITH <strong>of</strong> Tillygone, parted per fesse, or and argent, on the first three demi-pallets<br />

gules, and in base a man's heart <strong>of</strong> the last ; crest, a lure proper : motto, 1/enit<br />

Major GEORGE KEITH <strong>of</strong> Arthurhouse, Sheriff-depute <strong>of</strong> the Sheriffdom <strong>of</strong> Kincardine,<br />

descended <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> the Earl Marischal, argent, a saltier and chief<br />

gules, the last charged with three pallets or, all within a bordure compone azure,<br />

and the first ; crest, a dexter hand holding a pick erect, proper, headed argent :<br />

motto, Justa scquor.<br />

KEITH <strong>of</strong> Auquhorsk, descended <strong>of</strong> the Earl Marischal, argent, a chief paly <strong>of</strong><br />

six, gules and or, on the second a buckle <strong>of</strong> the first. L. R.<br />

Major ROBERT KEITH <strong>of</strong> Craig, argent, on a chief embattled gules, three pallets<br />

or, a bordure crenelle <strong>of</strong> the second ; crest, a stag standing at a gaze or, in a watching<br />

posture under a bush <strong>of</strong> holly, all proper : motto, Fortiter qui sedulo. L. R.<br />

KEITH <strong>of</strong> Inverugie, argent, a chief paly <strong>of</strong> six pieces, or and gules, within a<br />

bordure ingrailed sable. Esplin's MS.<br />

They <strong>of</strong> the surname <strong>of</strong> DICKSON, as descended <strong>of</strong> one Richard Keith, said to be<br />

a son <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Keith Marischal, took their name from Richard, (called in<br />

the south country Dick), and to show themselves to be descended <strong>of</strong> Keith Earl<br />

Marischal, they carry the chief <strong>of</strong> Keith. There are several families <strong>of</strong> the name<br />

<strong>of</strong> Dickson, <strong>of</strong> a good old standing, in the shire <strong>of</strong> Berwick.<br />

DICKSON <strong>of</strong> Bughtrig there, azure, three mullets argent, on a chief or, as many<br />

pallets gules; crest, a hand holding a sword in bend, proper: with the motto, Fortes<br />

fortuna at. juv L. R.<br />

DICKSON <strong>of</strong> Belchester, now the only old family <strong>of</strong> that name since Bughtrig has<br />

failed, carries the same as Bughtrig. The next to it is DICKSON <strong>of</strong> Newbigging,<br />

'who carries the same also, with additional figures for his difference.<br />

Mr ALEXANDER DICKSON <strong>of</strong> Wester-Binning, descended <strong>of</strong> Bughtrig, carries as<br />

Bughtrig, within a bordure ingrailed gules; crest, a man's heart, proper, winged<br />

argent : motto, Cadum versus.<br />

Sir ROBERT DICKSON <strong>of</strong> Sornbegg, now designed <strong>of</strong> Inneresk, argent, three stars<br />

gules, on a chief <strong>of</strong> the last, as many pallets or ; crest, a hart couchant and gardant<br />

proper, attired or, within two branches <strong>of</strong> laurel disposed orle-ways. L. R.<br />

The arms <strong>of</strong> the branches <strong>of</strong> the principal family <strong>of</strong> DOUGLAS, v/hich were nobi-<br />

litate, as they are to be found in our old Books <strong>of</strong> Blazon, are as follows :<br />

WILLIAM DOUGLAS Lord LIDDISDALE, natural son to Archibald Earl <strong>of</strong> Galloway,<br />

quarterly, first and fourth Douglas, bruised with a batton sinister sable ; second<br />

and third sable, a lion rampant argent, for Liddisdale.<br />

ARCHIBALD DOUGLAS Earl <strong>of</strong> MURRAY, third son <strong>of</strong> James Earl <strong>of</strong> Douglas, quarterly,<br />

first and fourth argent, three cushions within a double tressure flowered and<br />

second and<br />

counter-flowered with flower-de-luces gules, for the earldom <strong>of</strong> Murray ;<br />

third argent, a man's heart gules, on a chief azure, three stars <strong>of</strong> the first, for<br />

Douglas.<br />

HUGH DOUGLAS Earl <strong>of</strong> ORMOND, fourth son <strong>of</strong> James Earl <strong>of</strong> Douglas, ermine,<br />

;i man's heart gules, on a chief azure, three stars argent. Which two last Earls<br />

were forfeited for their rebellion, in going with William Earl <strong>of</strong> Douglas against.<br />

King James II. and III. so that in this William the chief family <strong>of</strong> the Douglases<br />

ended.<br />

The principal and chief family <strong>of</strong> DOUGLAS, since the extinction <strong>of</strong> the old line<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Douglases, is that <strong>of</strong> ANGUS ; the first <strong>of</strong> which family was George Douglas,<br />

son <strong>of</strong> William first Earl <strong>of</strong> Douglas, by his third wife Margaret Stewart, daughter<br />

und heiress to John Stewart Earl <strong>of</strong> Angus, son to Sir Alexander Stewart <strong>of</strong> Bonkill,<br />

son <strong>of</strong> Sir John Stewart <strong>of</strong> Bonkill, brother to James Lord High Steward <strong>of</strong><br />

Scotland, father to Walter Lord High Steward, father to King Robert II.<br />

MARGARET, Countess <strong>of</strong> ANGUS, bore to her husband William Earl <strong>of</strong> Douglas, a<br />

-on George, in whose favour she resigned the earldom <strong>of</strong> Angus in Parliament, the<br />

<strong>of</strong> April 1389: This George Douglas. Earl <strong>of</strong> Angus, married Mary, eldest
