Sir ANDREW BALFOUR, an eminent and learned physician, a son <strong>of</strong> Denmill, car-<br />

ried the arms <strong>of</strong> that family with a filial difference.<br />

BALFOUR <strong>of</strong> Balbirnie, argent, on a cheveron, ingrailcd between three mullets<br />

sable, a selch's head erased. <strong>of</strong> the first; crest, a palm tree, proper; with the motto,<br />

This family ended in an heiress, married to a younger son <strong>of</strong> the Lord Seaton, now-<br />

designed Seaton. <strong>of</strong> Carriston, who quarters these srms with Seaton. Balfour's<br />

BALFOUR <strong>of</strong> Ballow, sable, a cheveron or, charged with an otter's head erased<br />

<strong>of</strong> the first, and in chief a label <strong>of</strong> three points gules. Balfour's Manuscript.<br />

BALFOUR <strong>of</strong> Lalethen, sable, on a chevenan argent, betwixt three roses <strong>of</strong> the<br />

second, an otter's head erased <strong>of</strong> the first. These last blazons, are in Sir James<br />

Balfour, Lyon King at Arms, his Manuscript <strong>of</strong> Blazons ; where he says, I confirmed<br />

to Dr David Balfour <strong>of</strong> Lalethen his arms, in anno 1638.<br />

LANGLANDS <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, a family <strong>of</strong> a good standing in Teviotdale, argent, on a<br />

cheveron gules, three stars <strong>of</strong> the first, Mackenzie's <strong>Heraldry</strong> ; crest, an anchor in<br />

pale placed in the sea, proper : motto, Spero. Lyon Register.<br />

BALCASK.IE <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, -vert, on a cheveron argent, three trefoils slipped <strong>of</strong> the<br />

DUNCAN <strong>of</strong> Ardounie, gules, on a cheveron between two cinquefoils in chief, and<br />

and a hunting horn in base, argent, virroled and stringed azure, three buckles <strong>of</strong> the<br />

last ; crest, a grey-hound issuing from the wreath, proper, collared or : motto,<br />

DUNCAN <strong>of</strong> Seafield, now <strong>of</strong> Lundie, in Angus, gules, a cheveron or, between two<br />

cinquefoils in chief, and a hunting-horn in base argent, garnished azure ; crest, a<br />

ship under sail : motto, Disce pati; as in the Flate <strong>of</strong> Achievements.<br />

DUNCAN <strong>of</strong> Mott, gules, on a cheveron between two cinquefoils in chief, and<br />

n hunting horn in base, or, three buckles azure. Font's Manuscript. And there<br />

KNOWS <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, argent, a cheveron between three roses gules.<br />

The surname <strong>of</strong> Lr ARMONTH, Hector Boece places this amongst the oldest surnames<br />

in the reign <strong>of</strong> Malcolm III. The armorial bearing <strong>of</strong> this name, or, on a cheveron<br />

sable, three mascles <strong>of</strong> the first. The principal family <strong>of</strong> this name was Learmonth<br />

<strong>of</strong> Esselmont in the Merse, <strong>of</strong> which was Thomas Learmonth, commonly<br />

called the Rymer, who lived in the reign <strong>of</strong> Alexander III. A son <strong>of</strong> this family<br />

married Janet Dairsie, heiress <strong>of</strong> Dairsie ih Fife, for which he added a rose, a part <strong>of</strong><br />

his wife's bearing, for his difference, carried by the Learmonths <strong>of</strong> Dairsie.<br />

LEARMOMTH <strong>of</strong> Balcony, quarterly, first and fourth or, on a cheveron sable, three<br />

mascles <strong>of</strong> the first, for Learmonth; second and third azure, on a bend argent, three<br />

roses giti'ts, for Dairsie, some say Balcomy ; crest, a rose slipped gules : motto, S:<br />
