issue <strong>of</strong> his body, he procured from King Charles I. on behalf <strong>of</strong> his daughter<br />
Mary and her descendants, certain letters patent, whereby the title and dignity <strong>of</strong><br />
F.arl <strong>of</strong> Findlater was conferred upon her, and Patrick Ogilvie <strong>of</strong> Inchmartin, her<br />
husband. They had James, their son and heir, who married Anne, only daughter<br />
<strong>of</strong> Hugh Earl <strong>of</strong> Eglinton, by Anne his wife, daughter <strong>of</strong> James Marquis <strong>of</strong><br />
Hamilton, by whom he had James the present Earl <strong>of</strong> Findlater, and his brother<br />
Colonel Patrick Ogilvie <strong>of</strong> Lonmay ; for which see Mr Crawfurd's Peerage.<br />
The arms <strong>of</strong> this family <strong>of</strong> Deskford, before it was dignified, are illuminated on<br />
the house <strong>of</strong> Falahall, 1604, quarterly, first and fourth argent, a lion passant gardant<br />
gules, and a crescent in base <strong>of</strong> the same, for Ogilvie ; second and third argent v<br />
a cross ingrailed sable, for Sinclair <strong>of</strong> Deskford ; and afterwards, when dignified<br />
with the title <strong>of</strong> Lord Deskford, they carried over their quartered arms, by way<br />
<strong>of</strong> surtout, an escutcheon gules, with the sun in its splendour, proper, which <strong>of</strong><br />
late has been 'disused, and have carried only, quarterly, Ogilvie, (with the lion<br />
crowned) and Sinclair, supported by two lions gardant gules ; and for crest, another<br />
lion <strong>of</strong> the same, holding a plum-rule : with the motto, lout jour. As in<br />
Plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements.<br />
OGILVIE Lord BANFF, argent, a lion passant gardant, gules, crowned or ; for<br />
Ogilvie, second and third argent, three papingoes vert, beaked and membred gules,<br />
for Hume <strong>of</strong> Fastcastle ; supported on the dexter by a man in armour, with a target,<br />
all proper ; and on the sinister, by a lion rampant, gules ; crest, a lion's head<br />
erased gules : motto, Fideliter.<br />
The first <strong>of</strong> this family was Walter Ogilvie <strong>of</strong> Dunlugas, a son <strong>of</strong> Sir Walter<br />
Ogilvie <strong>of</strong> Boyne, by Margaret his wife, one <strong>of</strong> the daughters and co-heirs <strong>of</strong> Sir<br />
James Edmonstone <strong>of</strong> that Ilk. He married Alison, one <strong>of</strong> the heiresses <strong>of</strong> Patrick<br />
Hume <strong>of</strong> Fastcastle, in the reign <strong>of</strong> King James IV. ; and by her had Sir Walter<br />
his son and successor. This Walter Ogilvie, designed <strong>of</strong> Banff, in a charter granted<br />
to him by George Earl <strong>of</strong> Huntly, <strong>of</strong> the lands <strong>of</strong> Auchannachie in the forrestry<br />
<strong>of</strong> Boyne, <strong>of</strong> the date 1491, in which the Earl calls him, Armiger noster, which<br />
charter is confirmed by King James IV. 1495. (Haddington's Collections.)<br />
Walter had by his wife Alison, George Ogilvie <strong>of</strong> Dunlugas, who married Beatrix,<br />
daughter <strong>of</strong> George Lord Seaton. Their son and successor was another Walter,<br />
father <strong>of</strong> Sir Walter Ogilvie <strong>of</strong> Dunlugas, father <strong>of</strong> Sir George ; who, for his<br />
loyalty to King Charles I. was, by letters patent, bearing date 3ist <strong>of</strong> August<br />
1642, created Lord Banff, who, by a daughter <strong>of</strong> the Lord Duffus, had George his<br />
son and successor, who took to wife Agnes, a daughter <strong>of</strong> Alexander Lord Halker-<br />
ton, and had with her Mr George and Sir Alexander Ogilvie <strong>of</strong> Forglen.<br />
Which George, second Lord Banff, by his lady, a daughter <strong>of</strong> William Keith<br />
Earl Marischal, had, for his son and successor, George, the present Lord Banff, who<br />
married Helen, daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir John Lauder <strong>of</strong> Fountainhall, one <strong>of</strong> the Senators<br />
<strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong> Justice.<br />
OGILVIE <strong>of</strong> Innerquharity, the first <strong>of</strong> which was a younger son <strong>of</strong> Alexander<br />
Ogilvie <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, and the heiress <strong>of</strong> Auchterhouse. These <strong>of</strong> this family carry<br />
collared with an<br />
quarterly, first and fourth argent, a lion passant gardant gules,<br />
open crown, and crowned with a close imperial one, or, for Ogilvie ; second and<br />
Third argent, an eagle displayed sable, beaked and membred gules, for Ramsay <strong>of</strong><br />
Auchterhouse ; and in the centre, by way <strong>of</strong> surtout, the badge <strong>of</strong> the Order <strong>of</strong> a<br />
Knight Baronet, as by the present Sir John Ogilvie, Bart..<br />
Mr JOHN OGILVIE <strong>of</strong> Balbegno, whose father is brother-german to Sir John<br />
Ogilvie <strong>of</strong> Innerquharity, carries the same with Innerquharity, within a bordure<br />
azure, for his difference ; and for crest, a flower <strong>of</strong> the sun ; with the motto, >uo<br />

Sir WALTER OGILVIE <strong>of</strong> Boyne, second son <strong>of</strong> Sir Walter Ogilvie <strong>of</strong> Lintrathan,<br />
by his wife the heiress <strong>of</strong> Deskford, as before, married Margaret Edmonstone,<br />
"econd daughter and co-heir <strong>of</strong> James Edmonstone <strong>of</strong> that Ilk. He got with her,<br />
halt <strong>of</strong> the lands <strong>of</strong> Tulliallan, which he excambed with his wife's sister and her<br />
husband, Patrick Blackadder, for the thanedom <strong>of</strong> Boyne, as by the charter <strong>of</strong> extambion<br />
which I have seen {penes Ogilvie <strong>of</strong> Boyne) dated at Glasgow the 25th<br />
ot February 1484, and confirmed by King James III. that same year. His son
