Others are <strong>of</strong> the opinion, that the Grants are <strong>of</strong> the same stock <strong>of</strong> people with<br />

the BIZAR;S, ox BISSETS, <strong>of</strong> Lovat, who carried also crowns for their armorial<br />

figures; and by an evident granted by Bisset <strong>of</strong> Lovat to the Bishop <strong>of</strong> Murray,<br />

1258, in which is mentioned Dominus Laurentius Grant, and Robertas Grant, friends<br />

to the same Bisset. However, the family <strong>of</strong> Grant is both ancient and powerful.<br />

In anno 1380, Dominus Laurentius Grant is sheriff <strong>of</strong> Inverness, and Michael<br />

Grant is one <strong>of</strong> the barons who attended Marr Earl <strong>of</strong> Mar'r, while the king's lieutenant<br />

in. the North.<br />

The principal family <strong>of</strong> the name is Grant <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, sometimes designed <strong>of</strong><br />

Freuchie.<br />

John Grant <strong>of</strong> Freuchie obtains a charter <strong>of</strong> confirmation <strong>of</strong> that barony from<br />

King James IV. holding it <strong>of</strong> his Majesty for military services, as by the charter in<br />

the Earl <strong>of</strong> Haddington's Collections, page 581, by which it is evident he was the<br />

head <strong>of</strong> a potent clan, and following, by the reddendo <strong>of</strong> the charter, viz. Unam<br />

lam sujfultam, which is explained by the following words <strong>of</strong> the charter, viz.<br />

" Tres sutiicientes equestres pro quibusdam decem libratis terrarum baronise prae-<br />

" dicta?, tempore guerrae, extra~ regnum, una cum omnibus defensalibus personis,<br />

" dictas terras & baroniam inhabitantibus, ad nostrum & successorum nostrorum<br />

" manclatum, tempore convocations ligiorum nostrorum, infra praefatum nostrum<br />

" regnum."<br />

From this John is lineally descended the present GRANT <strong>of</strong> Freuchie,<br />

oc <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, whose achievement is gules, three antique crowns or; crest, a burning<br />

hill, proper; supporters, two savages, (or naked men) proper: motto, Stand<br />

sure. N. R.<br />

JOHN GRANT <strong>of</strong> Ballendallach, descended <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Grant, carries gules, a<br />

boar's head couped, between three antique crowns or; crest, an oak tree growing<br />

out <strong>of</strong> the wreath, proper: motto, Suo se robore firmat. Ibid.<br />

Sir FRANCIS GRANT <strong>of</strong> Cullen, Baronet, one <strong>of</strong> the Senators <strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong><br />

Justice, carries gules, three antique crowns or, as descended from Grant <strong>of</strong> that ilk,<br />

within a bordure ermine, in quality <strong>of</strong> a judge; supported with two angels, proper;<br />

crest, a book expanded; motto, on an escrol above, Sttum cuique; and on a com-<br />

partment below, yebo-o'ab-jireb, as by a special warrant under his majesty's hand,<br />

the i yth day <strong>of</strong> May 1720.<br />

JOHN GRANT <strong>of</strong> Corimony, descended <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Grant, bears as Grant,<br />

within a bordure cheque, or arid gules; crest, a derrri-savage, proper: motto, Pll<br />

stand sure. N. R.<br />

JOHN GRANT <strong>of</strong> Darlway descended <strong>of</strong> Ballendallach, carries Ballendallach's<br />

arms, within a bordure or; crest, a dexter hand holding<br />

motto, Radicem firmant frondes. Ibid.<br />

a branch <strong>of</strong> oak, proper:<br />

GRANT <strong>of</strong> Gartenbeg, descended <strong>of</strong> Grant <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, carries Grant, within a<br />

bordure ingrailed or; crest, the trunk <strong>of</strong> an oak tree sprouting out some leaves,<br />

with the sun shining thereon, all : proper motto, Tefavente virebo. Ibid.<br />

JOHN GRANT <strong>of</strong> Carron, descended <strong>of</strong> Freuchie, gules, a dove argent, holding in<br />

her beak a'n olive branch vert, betwixt three antique crowns or; and, for crest, an<br />

adder nuved, with her head erect, proper: motto, Wise and harmless. Ibid.<br />

JAMES GRANT <strong>of</strong> Auchernick, descended <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Grant, gules, a star<br />

betwixt three antique crowns or; crest, a burning hill, proper: motto, Stand sure.<br />

The ensign <strong>of</strong> the EPISCOPAL SEE <strong>of</strong> ELY, in England, gules, three ducal crowns,<br />

2 and i or ; and that <strong>of</strong> the SEE <strong>of</strong> BRISTOL, three ducal crowns in pale or.<br />

Tlie imperial mond, or globe, though an ensign <strong>of</strong> sovereignty,<br />

as well as the imperial<br />

crown, is carried as an armorial distinguishing figure by LAMONT, or LAMOND,<br />

<strong>of</strong> that Ilk, as relative to the name, being <strong>of</strong> old in a field azure: But more frequently<br />

the family has been in use to carry a white lion rampant (in place <strong>of</strong> the<br />

mond) in a field azure; crest, a hand couped at the wrist, proper: motto, Ne per eas<br />

nee spernas. (New Register.) Though this family is said to be <strong>of</strong> old with us,<br />

and originally from Ireland.
