HAY <strong>of</strong> Broxmouth, argent, three escutcheons vert. This estate went long<br />
since <strong>of</strong>f with an heiress who was married to a gentleman <strong>of</strong> the name <strong>of</strong> Home,<br />
<strong>of</strong> whom was descended Home Earl <strong>of</strong> Dunbar, and Home <strong>of</strong> Eccles, who quartered<br />
these arms with their own, <strong>of</strong> whom afterwards.<br />
HENRY HAY, Merchant in Leith, argent, three escutcheons gules, each charged<br />
with a garb or, banded <strong>of</strong> the second; crest, an ox-head couped, proper; motto,<br />

MONCUR <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, argent, a rose gules, and, on a chief <strong>of</strong> the last, three<br />

In the charters <strong>of</strong> Robert I. and David the Bruce, I have met with this name <strong>of</strong><br />
Moncur ; and in the reign <strong>of</strong> Robert III. Andreas Moiicur de eodsm is a \vir<br />
ness in a charter <strong>of</strong> Rait <strong>of</strong> Halgreen ; other books give to Moncur <strong>of</strong> that Ilk,<br />
argent, a fesse between three escalops gules.<br />

CECIL Earl <strong>of</strong> EXETER, and Baron <strong>of</strong> Burleigh, barry <strong>of</strong> ten pieces argent<br />
and azure, over all, six escutcheons sable, 3, .2, and i, each charged with a<br />
lion rampant <strong>of</strong> the first. William Cecil, descended <strong>of</strong> the Cecils in Lincoln-<br />
shire, was a great favourite <strong>of</strong> Queen Elizabeth's, who honoured him with the title<br />
<strong>of</strong> Lord Burleigh, and constituted him Lord Treasurer ; his son Thomas was, by<br />
King James I. <strong>of</strong> Great Britain, by letters patent, created Earl <strong>of</strong> Exeter, which is<br />
observed to be the first precedent whereby any man was advanced to the title <strong>of</strong><br />
Earl <strong>of</strong> the principal city, when another had the dignity <strong>of</strong> the country. Charles<br />
Blunt being then Earl <strong>of</strong> Devonshire, his younger brother, Robert Cecil was, by<br />
the same king, about the same time created Lord CECIL <strong>of</strong> Essenden, Viscount Cranburn,<br />
being the first <strong>of</strong> that degree that wore a coronet. He was soon after made<br />
Earl <strong>of</strong> Salisbury, Lord Treasurer, Knight <strong>of</strong> the Garter, and Chancellor <strong>of</strong> the<br />
University <strong>of</strong> Cambridge, and carried as his brother, Exeter, with a crescent for<br />
difference.<br />
The name <strong>of</strong> LOUDHAME, in England, argent, three escutcheons sable.<br />
To end with the escutcheon, in its various disposition in a coat <strong>of</strong> arms, I shall<br />
only give the ensign <strong>of</strong> the King <strong>of</strong> Portugal, which is argent, five escutcheon<br />
azure, placed cross-ways, each charged with as many besants <strong>of</strong> the first in saltier,<br />
and pointed sable (the arms <strong>of</strong> all Portugal) within a bordure gules, charged with<br />
seven towers or, 3 in chief, 2 in flanks, and as many in base. Which Blazon<br />
is thus latined<br />
