Oi THE BEND..<br />

<strong>of</strong> Sir PHILIP ANSTKUHER <strong>of</strong> that Ilk. See the arms <strong>of</strong> Lord Newark quartered,<br />

with those <strong>of</strong> Anstruther, in the Plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements.<br />

LESLIE Earl <strong>of</strong> LEVEN, quarterly, first and fourth azure, a thistle, proper, ensigned<br />

with an imperial crown or, as a coat <strong>of</strong> concession ; second and third argent,<br />

on a bend azure, three buckles or, for Leslie ; crest, a man in armour holding a.<br />

sword, all proper, and other two for supporters after the same fashion, sometimes<br />

represented with colours over their shoulders ; with the motto, Pro ^ rege patria.<br />

The first raiser <strong>of</strong> this family was one David Leslie, who served under Gustavus<br />

Aclolphus, and became rich by the industry <strong>of</strong> his wife Anne Renton, said to be <strong>of</strong><br />

the family <strong>of</strong> Renton <strong>of</strong> Billy, in the shire <strong>of</strong> Berwick. On his return to Scotland,<br />

he was by King Charles I. the nth <strong>of</strong> October 1641, created Lord Balgonie and<br />

Earl <strong>of</strong> Leven : He had, by his wife a son, Alexander Leslie Lord Balgonie, who<br />

;narried Margaret Leslie, daughter to John sixth Earl <strong>of</strong> Rothes, and with her had<br />

a son, Alexander, who outlived his father and grandfather, and was Earl <strong>of</strong> Leven ;<br />

:tnd a daughter, Katharine, married to the Lord Melville, afterwards Earl <strong>of</strong> Mel-<br />

ville. Alexander Earl <strong>of</strong> Leven, married a daughter <strong>of</strong> Howard Earl <strong>of</strong> Carlisle,<br />

and died without issue. David Melville, son <strong>of</strong> the Earl <strong>of</strong> Melville, and his lady<br />

Katharine Leslie, sister to Alexander the last Earl <strong>of</strong> Leven, in right <strong>of</strong> his mother,<br />

and taking upon him the name and arms <strong>of</strong> Leslie, is Earl <strong>of</strong> Leven, and carries<br />

the above achievement : He married Lady Jean Wemyss, sister to the present Earl<br />

<strong>of</strong> Wemyss, and has issue.<br />

GEORGE LESLIE <strong>of</strong> Findrassie, quarterly, as the Earl <strong>of</strong>. Rotlies, within a bordure<br />

,:bcque gules and or ; crest, a buckle argent : mptto, Firma durant. L. R-.<br />

THOMAS LESLIE <strong>of</strong> Oustons, son <strong>of</strong> David Leslie, who was eldest son to William<br />

Leslie <strong>of</strong> Lady wall, argent, on a bend azure, between three oaken branches slipped<br />

vert, acorned, proper, as many buckles or; crest, a hand holding a writing pen,<br />

proper : motto, Soli Deo Gloria. Lyon Register.<br />

NORMAN LESLIE, sometime Dean <strong>of</strong> Guild <strong>of</strong> Aberdeen, argent, a pair <strong>of</strong> wings<br />

conjoined, proper, surmounted <strong>of</strong> a fesse azure, charged with three buckles or :<br />

motto, God guide all. Lyon Register.<br />

WILLIAM LESLIE <strong>of</strong> Burdsbank, whose grandfather was a son <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong><br />

Rothes, carries the quartered coat <strong>of</strong> the Earl <strong>of</strong> Rothes, within a bordure parted<br />

per pale cheque and counter-componed, gules and or ; crest, a buckle or : motto,<br />

Keep fast. Lyon Register.<br />

Mr JAMES LESLIE, Advocate, second son to George Leslie, sometime provost <strong>of</strong><br />

Aberdeen, and descended <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Balquhan, argent, on a fesse azure, three<br />

buckles or, within a bordure <strong>of</strong> the second, charged with as many stars <strong>of</strong> the first ;<br />

crest, a griffin, proper, winged or, and holding in the dexter talon a buckle <strong>of</strong> the<br />

last : motto, Probitas & firmilas. Lyon Register.<br />

Sir WILLIAM SCOTT <strong>of</strong> Thirlestane, Baronet, or, a bend azure, charged with u<br />

mullet pierced, betwixt two crescents <strong>of</strong> the first, within a double tressure flowered<br />

and counter-flowered <strong>of</strong> the second ; which arms are timbred with helmet and<br />

mantlings befitting his quality, and upon a wreath <strong>of</strong> his tinctures ; for crest, a<br />

mural crown, and issuing thereout, six horsemen's lances or spears, with pennons<br />

thereat, three and three, disposed in saltier ; supporters, two men in coats <strong>of</strong> mail,<br />

with steel caps, holding in their hand, each <strong>of</strong> them, a spear with pennons, all pro-<br />

per ; and for motto, Ready, ny : ready As in the Plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements.<br />

This family was anciently designed <strong>of</strong> Eskdale, alias Houpayslay, as by the<br />

genealogical account <strong>of</strong> the family. Arthur Scott <strong>of</strong> Eskdale, father <strong>of</strong> Robert<br />

Scott <strong>of</strong> Eskdale, alias Houpayslay, who was warden <strong>of</strong> the West Border, and great<br />

that took the<br />

grandfather <strong>of</strong> Robert Scott <strong>of</strong> Houpayslay, the first <strong>of</strong> the family<br />

<strong>of</strong> Thirlestane. Which last mentioned Robert <strong>of</strong> Thirlestane married<br />

designation<br />

a daughter <strong>of</strong> Johnston <strong>of</strong> that Ilk ; which family<br />

<strong>of</strong> Marquis <strong>of</strong> Annandale.<br />

is now honoured with the title<br />

JOHN SCOTT <strong>of</strong> Thirlestane, their son, a gentleman <strong>of</strong> entire loyalty, for his ready<br />

Cervices to his sovereign James V. was honoured by that king, as a special con-<br />

cession <strong>of</strong> his favour, with a part <strong>of</strong> the royal ensign and other suitable figures, to<br />

adorn his armorial bearing, under his majesty's hand, and the subscription <strong>of</strong><br />

Sir Thomas Erskine <strong>of</strong> Brechin, secretary, as follows :
