and fructuated between two papingoes indorsed, feeding upon the clusters <strong>of</strong> the<br />

grape, all proper ; crest, a hand holding a cluster <strong>of</strong> : grapes, proper motto, Hoc<br />

WALKINSHAW <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, argent, upon a mount a grove<br />

frew ; where it is said that one Dungallus, filius Christini Judicis de Levenox (who<br />

was the person that exercised a jurisdiction over the vassals and tenants <strong>of</strong> the<br />

earldom <strong>of</strong> Lennox) is so designed in the excambion he makes <strong>of</strong> his lands <strong>of</strong> Knock,<br />

with the abbot and convent <strong>of</strong> Paisley, for the lands <strong>of</strong> Walkinshaw, in the year<br />

1235, the list year <strong>of</strong> the reign <strong>of</strong> King Alexander II. and from these lands his<br />

descendants took the name <strong>of</strong> Walkinshaw, and arms relative thereto.<br />

The lineal male succession <strong>of</strong> this family continued till it was represented by<br />

two daughters heiresses, the one marrried to a gentleman <strong>of</strong> the name <strong>of</strong> Morton,<br />

and the other to Walkinshaw <strong>of</strong> Little-Fulwood, who got with her the lands <strong>of</strong><br />

Wester-Walkingshaw, whose issue continued in a lineal descent till the year 1636,<br />

that the estate, by succession, came to Mr John Walkinshaw <strong>of</strong> Garturk, the next<br />

heir-male, <strong>of</strong> whom is lineally descended John Walkinshaw now <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, son<br />

<strong>of</strong> Gavin Walkingshaw <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, who carried, as in our New Register, argent,<br />

upon a mount in base, a grove <strong>of</strong> trees, proper ; crest, a martlet, proper : motto,<br />

/// season. This Gavin Walkinshaw alienated the lands <strong>of</strong> Walkinshaw in the<br />

year 1683, to James Walkingshaw, Merchant in Glasgow, a younger son <strong>of</strong> John<br />

Walkinshaw <strong>of</strong> Burrowfield, who carried the arms <strong>of</strong> Walkinshaw <strong>of</strong> that Ilk,<br />

with a martlet for difference ; and John the son <strong>of</strong> James is now designed Walkinshaw<br />

<strong>of</strong> that Ilk.<br />

WALKINSHAW <strong>of</strong> Scotston, a younger son <strong>of</strong> Burrowfield, acquired Scotston<br />

from George Hutchison, anno 1691 ; he carries the arms <strong>of</strong> Walkinshaw with a<br />

suitable difference.<br />

WILLIAM SCROGIE, Commissary <strong>of</strong> Argyle, lineal representer <strong>of</strong> Scrogie <strong>of</strong> Invert,<br />

or, a cheveron azure, between two scrogs (branches <strong>of</strong> a tree wanting leaves) in<br />

chief, and a man's heart in base, proper ; crest, a trunk <strong>of</strong> an oak tree sprouting<br />

out leaves and branches, proper : motto, Ero quod eram. N. R.<br />

The.name <strong>of</strong> ROWANTREE, argent, on a cheveron between three rowan tree<br />

branches slipped, proper, as many crescents or. Font's MS.<br />

BLACKSTOCK <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, argent, three trunks or stocks <strong>of</strong> trees couped, under<br />

and above, 2 and i sable.<br />

The name <strong>of</strong> STOCK.DALE, azure, three stocks or-|trunks <strong>of</strong> trees eradicate or,<br />

with branches sprouting out, argent. Balf. MS.<br />

The name <strong>of</strong> DALGLEISH, argent, a tree eradicated lying fesse-ways vert, between<br />

three pheons azure. Mack. Her.<br />

The name <strong>of</strong> AIRMAN, argent, a dexter arm issuing out from the sinister side <strong>of</strong><br />

the shield, holding an oak tree eradicate, and broken<br />

proper,<br />

asunder near the branches,<br />

between a crescent in the sinister chief point, and a mullet in the dexter<br />

base point, gules.<br />

Mr WILLIAM AIKMAN <strong>of</strong> Cairny, Advocate and Representer <strong>of</strong> the Aikmans <strong>of</strong><br />

Loreburn, and old family in Angus, argent, a sinister hand in base issuing out <strong>of</strong> a<br />

cloud fesse-ways, holding an oaken batton pale-ways, proper, with a branch sprouting<br />

out <strong>of</strong> the top there<strong>of</strong>, surmounted <strong>of</strong> a bend ingrailed gules ; crest, an oak<br />

tree, proper : motto, Sub robore virtus. L. R.<br />

The name <strong>of</strong> LOTHIAN, argent, on a mount in base, proper, a pine tree vert, a<br />

talbot (i. e. a dog) tied thereto, proper, and, upon one <strong>of</strong> the branches, a bugle pendent<br />

<strong>of</strong> the second ; which arms, within a bordure vert, are recorded for RICHARD<br />

LOTHIAN, Merchant in Edinburgh; and, for crest, a bugle (i.e. hunting-horn) as the<br />

former ; with the motto, Non dormit qui custodit ; and, in the same Register, the<br />

above arms are given to JOHN LOTHIAN, Portioner <strong>of</strong> Kingsbarns, within a bordure<br />

invected azure, for his difference.
