Many famiiie-, in Germany, Spain and France, carry them, and several old families<br />

with us, some or" which I shall here mention.<br />

The honourable and ancient family <strong>of</strong> the surname <strong>of</strong> MAULE, Earls <strong>of</strong> PANM<br />

Lords Maule, Brechin and Navar, carry for the paternal coat <strong>of</strong> the name, parti,<br />

ardent and Cult's, a bordure charged with eight escalops, all counter-changed.<br />

Tins is family originally <strong>of</strong> French extraction; for there is a lordship or Maule<br />

in France, on the river Maudre, eight leagues from Paris, in the Vicccompte <strong>of</strong><br />

Paris, and confines <strong>of</strong> Normandy, which had the same arms, as by what follows :<br />

Ordericus Vitalis, who wrote about the middle <strong>of</strong> the twelfth century, tells us<br />

in his Ecclesiastical Ilb-iury, That Petrus e<br />

beginning <strong>of</strong> King Alexander 11. 's reign, married Christian, i ,/r l-'a!oniis, daughter<br />

<strong>of</strong> them successively Great Chamberlains <strong>of</strong> Scotland. By her he had the lord-<br />

ship or barony <strong>of</strong> Panmure and Btnvic, and to whom succeeded their son Sir \\\\<strong>of</strong><br />

arms came to be in fashion)<br />
