son Gilbert Johnstone, and the family continued in a lineal male succession till the<br />
reign <strong>of</strong> King Charles II. who. carried for arms, quarterly, first or, three crescents<br />
within a double tressure flowered and counter-flowered gules, for Seaton, as superior<br />
and over-lord ; second argent, a saltier, and, on a chief sable, three cushions <strong>of</strong> the<br />
field for Johnstone; third azure, three garbs or, for Buchan, as carried by the Lord<br />
Seaton ; and the fourth as first which arms are curiously embossed and illuminat-<br />
ed ou a ro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> a Hall in the house <strong>of</strong> Seaton. But in the Illuminated Book <strong>of</strong><br />
Arms by James Esplin, Marchmont Herald 1630, they are, quarterly, first Sea-<br />
ton; third and fourth Johnstone, and the fourth for the name <strong>of</strong> Elphingston argent,<br />
a cheveron sable between three boars' heads couped gules.<br />
JOHNSTONE <strong>of</strong> Gratney, another cadet <strong>of</strong> Johnstone <strong>of</strong> that Ilk ;<br />

on the front <strong>of</strong> the house <strong>of</strong> Gratney, <strong>of</strong> the date is<br />

Johnstone <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, with the addition <strong>of</strong> two mullets, the one in the collar, and<br />
the other in base points; crest, a man armed cap-a-pie on horseback, brandishing a<br />
word: motto, Nunquam nmi paratus. But as matriculated in the Lyon Register, he<br />
lately carries argent, a saltier sable, and, on a chief gules, three cushions or; crest,<br />
as above with the ; motto, Cave paratus. As in the plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements.<br />
JOHNSTONE <strong>of</strong> Westraw, or Westerhall, is descended <strong>of</strong> Herbert Johnstone, cousin<br />
to John Johnstone <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, who got from him, for his concurring to oppose the<br />
rebellion <strong>of</strong> the Earl <strong>of</strong> Douglas against King II. James the lands <strong>of</strong> Westerhall<br />
and Pittenain, in Lanarkshire, from whom Sir William Johnstone <strong>of</strong> Westraw,<br />
Baronet, is lineally descended : the family has been in use to carry the principal<br />
bearing <strong>of</strong> the name, as before blazoned, and for difference, a man's heart ensigned,<br />
with an imperial crown, proper, in base, being a part <strong>of</strong> the Douglasses bearing,<br />
to perpetuate the memory <strong>of</strong> the apprehending <strong>of</strong> Douglas Earl <strong>of</strong> Ormond,<br />
then in rebellion, by his predecessor ; and for crest and motto, those <strong>of</strong> the Mar-<br />
quis <strong>of</strong> Annandale. As the plate<br />

JoiiNStoN <strong>of</strong> Hilton in the Merse, carries the principal arms <strong>of</strong> Johnston, and<br />
for difference, only ingrailes the saltier ; crest, a sword and dagger crossing other<br />
saltier-ways, with the point upward, all proper: motto, Paratus ad anna. L. R.<br />

three cushions or, within a bordure <strong>of</strong> the first.<br />

There was an ancient family <strong>of</strong> the name <strong>of</strong> Johnston in the North, designed <strong>of</strong><br />
Caskieben : Sir George Johnston <strong>of</strong> Caskieben carried, first quarterly, and fourth<br />
argent, a saltier sable, and on a chief gules, three cushions or, for Johnston; second<br />
and third azure, on a bend between three hearts heads' erased argent, attired or, as<br />
jjiany cross croslets fitched <strong>of</strong> the second, for Marr, and Garioch <strong>of</strong> Caskieben,<br />
composed together in one coat, supporters, two Indians, proper, wreathed about the<br />
head and middle with laurel vert ; crest, a phoenix in flames, proper : motto, Vive<br />
ut<br />

Mr JOHN JOHNSTON <strong>of</strong> Wordmilns, argent, a saltier sable, between two esca-<br />
lops in fesse, and on a chief <strong>of</strong> the second, three cushions as the first ; crest ;<br />
j band, proper, holding an escallop gules : motto, Sine fraude Jides. Lyon Re-<br />
gister.<br />
PATRICK. JOHNSTON <strong>of</strong> Gormack, argent, a saltier and chief nebule sable, the<br />
charged with three cushions <strong>of</strong> the field ; crest, a spur-rowel within two<br />
branches <strong>of</strong> palm disposed in orle, proper : motto, Securior quo paratior. Lyon<br />

The JAR.DINES <strong>of</strong> Applegirth, an ancient family, carries the same arms almost<br />
with the Johnstons, but iu place <strong>of</strong> the cushions, have mullets, viz. argent, a saltier<br />
