bald Lord Napier, who married Elizabeth, daughter to John Earl <strong>of</strong> Marr, by<br />
whom he had Archibald, his son and successor, and John, who lost his life in the<br />
sea<br />
fight against the Dutch 1672 ; as also three daughters, Jean, married to Sir<br />
Thomas Nicolson <strong>of</strong> Carnock, Margaret to John Brisbane, Esq. Secretary to the<br />
Royal Navy, and resident from King Charles II. at the Court <strong>of</strong> France, and<br />
\Liry who died young. Archibald Lord Napier made a resignation <strong>of</strong> his honour<br />
in the hands <strong>of</strong> King Charles II. who was pleased to confer the title again by a<br />
new patent, <strong>of</strong> the date the 7th <strong>of</strong> February 1677, on him and the heirs <strong>of</strong> his<br />
body ; which failing, on the heirs <strong>of</strong> the bodies <strong>of</strong> his sisters successively. And<br />
he dying a bachelor 1683, the honour <strong>of</strong> Lord Napier devolved to<br />

Sir THOMAS NICOLSON <strong>of</strong> Carnock, his nephew, by his sister: but he dying young,<br />
the honour devolved on Margaret his aunt, who, by Mr Brisbane, her husband, had<br />
issue John Master <strong>of</strong> Napier, who died unmarried 1704; likewise a daughter Eliza-<br />
beth, married 1699 to Mr William Scott, then son and heir apparent to Francis<br />
Scott <strong>of</strong> Thirlestane, Baronet, to whom she had a son, Francis, the present Lord<br />
Napier, and daughters who died young. She dying 1705, and her mother Margaret<br />
Lady Napier 1706, the honour <strong>of</strong> Lord Napier devolved to her grandson by her<br />
daughter, Sir William Scot's son, Francis, the present Lord Napier, who quarters<br />
the arms <strong>of</strong> his father with these <strong>of</strong> the Lord Napier, thus, quarterly, first and<br />
fourth argent, a saltier ingrailed, cantoned with four roses gules, for Napier; second<br />
and third or, on a bend azure, a mullet betwixt two crescents <strong>of</strong> the first, within<br />
a double tressure flowered and counterflowered <strong>of</strong> the second, for Scott <strong>of</strong> Thirle-<br />
stane; which arms are timbred with crown, helmet, and mantlings befitting his quality,<br />
and issuing out <strong>of</strong> a wreath <strong>of</strong> his tinctures ; for crest, a right arm from the<br />
elbow grasping a crescent, proper; and above, on an escrol, for motto, Sans tache ;<br />
supported on the dexter by an eagle, proper, and on the sinister by a chevalier in<br />
a coat <strong>of</strong> mail, holding a spear with a pennon, all proper; and below the shield, by<br />
way <strong>of</strong> compartment, on the embattlement <strong>of</strong> a tower, argent, massoned sable,<br />
six lances disposed saltier-ways ;<br />
with this motto, Ready ay ready.<br />
The arms <strong>of</strong> the branches <strong>of</strong> this family, as they stand recorded in the Lyon<br />
Register, are these,<br />
ALEXANDER NAPIER, descended <strong>of</strong> a sixth son <strong>of</strong> Napier <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, argent, on<br />
a saltier ingrailed, between four roses gules, a flower-de-luce or, for his difference<br />
; crest, a dsxter hand erected, holding a crescent argent: motto, Sans tache.<br />
ARCHIBALD NAPIER <strong>of</strong> Balwhaple, descended <strong>of</strong> a third son <strong>of</strong> Napier, carries<br />
Napier with a mullet for difference ; crest, an eagle's leg erased in bend, proper,<br />
armed gules : motto, Usque fidelis.<br />
WILLIAM NAPIER <strong>of</strong> Ballikinranie, in the Lennox, one <strong>of</strong> the oldest cadets<br />
<strong>of</strong> Napier, carries Napier within a bordure gules; crest, a dexter hand holding an<br />
eagle's leg erased in bend, proper, armed gules : motto, Nil veretur veritas.<br />
Mr THOMAS NAPIER <strong>of</strong> Ballicharne, descended <strong>of</strong> a second son <strong>of</strong> Ballikinranie,<br />
carries as Ballikinranie ; but, for his difference, charges the bordure with eight cres-<br />
cents argent; crest, an eagle's leg erased, proper, armed gules, disposed fesse-ways :<br />
motto Vincit veritas.<br />
Mr ROBERT NAPIER <strong>of</strong> Falside carries Napier within a bordure indented gules,<br />
for his difference ; crest, two hands conjoined, and both grasping a sword, proper :<br />
motto, Absque dedecore.<br />
JAMES NAPIER <strong>of</strong> Harrieston, a second brother <strong>of</strong> Mr Robert Napier <strong>of</strong> Falside,<br />
carries the same with him ; but, for difference, charges the bordure with eight<br />
crescents argent.<br />
WILLIAM NAPIER <strong>of</strong> Tayock carries Napier, within a bordure indented gules,<br />
charged with eight martlets argent : motto, Patientia vlncit.<br />
WILLIAM NAPIER <strong>of</strong> Culcreuch, descended <strong>of</strong> a third son <strong>of</strong> the House <strong>of</strong> Napier,<br />
carries Napier, thus ; argent, on a saltier ingrailed betwixt four roses gules, five<br />
mullets <strong>of</strong> the field ; crest, a hand holding an eagle's leg erased, proper, the<br />
talons expanded gules : motto, Fides servata secundat. As in the Plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements.<br />
GLENEAGLES <strong>of</strong> that Ilk in Perthshire, argent, a saltier ingrailed sable; which<br />
t'amily ending in an heiress, in the reign <strong>of</strong> Robert the Bruce, was married to<br />
Haldane <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, an ancient family in the south, descended from Haldenus a
