<strong>of</strong> Dunmore ; which Robert was the first <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> JFintry.. His arms, in<br />
the old Books <strong>of</strong> Blazons, are or, on a chief indented sable, three escalops <strong>of</strong> the<br />
first. But, by our modern Blazons, the indenting <strong>of</strong> the chief is as large as piles,<br />
and surrounded with the double tressure <strong>of</strong> Scotland, as a badge <strong>of</strong> their descent<br />
from the royal family, and so carried by the branches <strong>of</strong> this family.<br />
GRAHAM <strong>of</strong> Claverhouse, a younger son <strong>of</strong> Fintry, <strong>of</strong> whom was lineally descended<br />
John Viscount <strong>of</strong> DUNDEE, who carried or, three piles waved sable, within a<br />
double tressure counter-flowered gules, and, on a chief <strong>of</strong> the second, three escalops<br />
<strong>of</strong> the first.<br />
GRAHAM <strong>of</strong> Duntroon, descended <strong>of</strong> Claverhouse, carries the same, but ingrails<br />
the chief for his difference ; crest, a flame <strong>of</strong> fire issuing out <strong>of</strong> the torce : motto,'<br />

GRAHAM <strong>of</strong> Pottento, another cadet <strong>of</strong> Claverhouse, gives the same, but makes<br />
the chief indents for his difference ; crest, a flame <strong>of</strong> fire issuing out <strong>of</strong> the torce,<br />
proper : motto, Semper<br />

Sir JOHN GRAHAM <strong>of</strong> Gogar, or, a cross croslet issuing out <strong>of</strong> a crescent gules,<br />
within a double tressure flowered and counter-flowered sable, on a chief <strong>of</strong> the last,<br />
three escalops <strong>of</strong> the first.<br />
Sir WILLIAM GRAHAM <strong>of</strong> Claypots, or, three piles issuing from a chief sable,<br />
charged with three escalops <strong>of</strong> the first, and in base a rose gules, all within a double<br />
tressure counter-flowered <strong>of</strong> the last.<br />
Sir WILLIAM GRAHAM <strong>of</strong> Ballargus carries the same, but, in place <strong>of</strong> the double tres-<br />
sure, he had a bordure azure : Which last three gentlemen, says Mr Workman, a<br />
famous herald, were descended <strong>of</strong> Fintry, and were knighted with Sir David Her-<br />
ring <strong>of</strong> Lethendy, by John Earl <strong>of</strong> Mont rose, Chancellor and Viceroy to King<br />
James VI. the first day <strong>of</strong> 1<br />
May 1604, to which he was a witness, as in his MS.<br />
JAMES GRAHAM <strong>of</strong> Monargan, a second son <strong>of</strong> Fintry, or, three piles sable, on a<br />
chief <strong>of</strong> the last, as many escalops <strong>of</strong> the first, all within a double tressure coun-<br />
ter-flowered gules, and a crescent for difference ; crest, a flame <strong>of</strong> fire issuing out<br />
<strong>of</strong> the torce or wreath, proper : motto, Nunquam deorsum. N. R.<br />
GRAHAM <strong>of</strong> Inchbrakie, the first <strong>of</strong> this family was Robert, a younger son <strong>of</strong><br />
William first Earl <strong>of</strong> Montrose, killed at the battle <strong>of</strong> Flodden. Inchbrakie gives<br />
for arms, or, a dike (or wall) fesse-ways, broken down in some places, and in base,<br />
a rose gules, on a chief sable three escalops <strong>of</strong> the first. The dike (or wall)<br />
here<br />
is assumed not only to difference, but to perpetuate the valiant action <strong>of</strong> Graham<br />
beforementioned, in throwing down the wall and ditch, which the Romans made<br />
betwixt Forth and Clyde, to keep out the Scots, which is to this day called<br />
Graham's Dike ; crest, a hand holding a : garland, proper motto, A Deo victoria.<br />

MUNGO GRAHAM <strong>of</strong> Gorthy, descended <strong>of</strong> Inchbrakie, or, three roses within a<br />
bordure gules, on a chief sable, as many escalops <strong>of</strong> the field ; crest, two arms<br />
issuing from a cloud erect, and lifting up a man's skull incircled with two branches<br />
<strong>of</strong> a palm tree, and over the head a marquis's coronet : motto, Sepulto viresco.<br />

GRAHAM <strong>of</strong> Grahamshall, descended <strong>of</strong> Gorthy, or, a lion rampant azure, between<br />
three roses gules, and on a chief sable, as many escalops <strong>of</strong> the first ; crest, a<br />
lion couchant under a sword in pale, proper : motto, Nee temere nee timide. N. R.<br />
GRAHAM <strong>of</strong> Brackness, descended <strong>of</strong> Inchbrakie, or, a lion's paw erased and<br />
erected between three roses gules, and, on a chief sable, as many escalops <strong>of</strong> the first ;<br />
i rest, a lion's paw, as the former, grasping a sword erected in pale, proper: motto,<br />

GRAHAM <strong>of</strong> Bachlavy, descended <strong>of</strong> Inchbrakie, or, a stag 'current between three<br />

William Earl Marischal <strong>of</strong> Scotland ; quarterly, first and fourth or, on a chief<br />
sable , three escalops <strong>of</strong> the first for Graham ; second and third, argent, three roses,<br />
gules, for the title <strong>of</strong> Montrose ; and, on a chief <strong>of</strong> the last, three pallets or, as<br />
descended by the mother from Keith Earl Marischal ; crest, a falcon killing a stork,,<br />
proper : motto, Memor esto. L. R. and Plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements^
