lion's paw : motto, Sincere vel tmri : Which arms were cut upon a stone abovt:<br />
a door <strong>of</strong> the House <strong>of</strong> Stodrig, in the year 1593, as the stone bears.<br />
The first <strong>of</strong> this family was Thomas M'Dowall, designed burgess <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh,<br />
who bought the lands <strong>of</strong> Stothang, now Stodrig, in the shire <strong>of</strong> Roxburgh, from<br />
John Ormiston <strong>of</strong> Meryden, as by his charter granted to the said Thomas, the roth<br />
<strong>of</strong> July 1520, which I have seen. From him is lineally desended the present<br />
Thomas M'Dowall <strong>of</strong> Stodrig.<br />
There was a great and old family <strong>of</strong> this name in Argyleshire, called M'OuL,<br />
M'DOWALL. or M'DuoALL, Lords <strong>of</strong> LORN, whose title and lands went by an heir-<br />
ess, to Stewart, Lord <strong>of</strong> Lorn, and are now in the family <strong>of</strong> Argyle; Colin Campbell,<br />
the first Earl <strong>of</strong> Argyle, having married Isabel, heiress <strong>of</strong> -Stewart <strong>of</strong> Lorn.<br />
DUNCAN M'OuL, Lord <strong>of</strong> LORN, built the Priory <strong>of</strong> Ard-chattan in Lorn, and<br />
endowed it with several lands.<br />
The heir-male <strong>of</strong> this family is John M'Dougall <strong>of</strong> Dunolik, whose castle <strong>of</strong><br />
Dunolik was the mansion-house <strong>of</strong> the said family.<br />
The arms <strong>of</strong> this family were, quarterly, first and fourth azure, a lion rampant<br />
argent, for the name <strong>of</strong> M'Dougall ; second and third or, a lymphad sable, with<br />
flames <strong>of</strong> fire issuing out <strong>of</strong> the top-mast, proper ; as in the Plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements,<br />
cut at the charge <strong>of</strong> John M'Dowall, Younger <strong>of</strong> Logan.<br />
Mr JOHN M'DOWALL <strong>of</strong> Neilsland, descended <strong>of</strong> M'DOWALL or M'DOUGALL <strong>of</strong><br />
Dunolik, parted per fesse waved azure and or, on the first, a lion rampant argent,<br />
gorged with an antique crown vert. Lyon Register.<br />
ANDREW M'DOWALL, Citizen and Merchant in London, descended <strong>of</strong> M'Dowall<br />
<strong>of</strong> Garthland, argent, a lion rampant azure, crowned with an antique crown or,<br />
within a bordure cheque <strong>of</strong> the same tinctures ; crest, a lion's paw erased and<br />
erected, proper, holding an olive brunch vert : motto, Vincam vel tnorior. Lyon<br />

Mr ANDREW M'DOWALL, Advocate, second son <strong>of</strong> the present Robert M'Dowall<br />
<strong>of</strong> Logan, by his wife Sarah, daughter to Sir John Shaw <strong>of</strong> Greenock, bears azure,<br />
a lion rampant argent r gorged with an antique crown or, in the .dexter chief point<br />
<strong>of</strong> the shield a covered cup or, for his maternal figure, all within a bordure ermine.<br />
for his difference : crest and motto, above and below, the same with his father, before<br />
blazoned : As in Plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements.<br />
PATRICK M'DOWALL <strong>of</strong> Culgroat, brother to the present Robert, and son to the<br />
deceased Patrick M'Dowall <strong>of</strong> Logan, by Isabel, daughter to Sir Robert Adair <strong>of</strong><br />
Kilhist, bears azure, a lion rampant argent, gorged with an antique crown or, within<br />
a bordure argent, charged with eight sinister hands couped and palme gules, for<br />
a maternal difference ; with crest and motto as carried by the said Robert. Plate<br />

PATRICK M'DOWALL <strong>of</strong> Crichen, the eldest descendant <strong>of</strong> the M'Dowalls <strong>of</strong> Lo-<br />
gant now extant, (one <strong>of</strong> his predecessors was a son <strong>of</strong> John M'Dowall <strong>of</strong> Logan<br />
by Margaret, daughter to Crawfurd <strong>of</strong> Carse, his second wife),<br />
bears azure, a lion<br />
rampant argent, gorged with an antique crown or, on a dexter canton argent, a<br />
hart's head cabossed gules, for a maternal difference ; with crest and motto, as car-<br />
ried by the family.<br />
Plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements.<br />
The surname <strong>of</strong> MAITLAND, or, a lion rampant gules, couped in all its joints <strong>of</strong><br />
the first ; relative to the name, writ <strong>of</strong> old Mautlant, quasi mutilatus in hello. In<br />
the Chartulary <strong>of</strong> Dryburgh, Richard de Mautlant gives several lands to that ab-<br />
bacy, which are confirmed by his son William de Mautlant <strong>of</strong> Thirlestane. In a<br />
Lauder <strong>of</strong> Fountain -<br />
principal charter 'which 1 did see in the custody <strong>of</strong> Sir John<br />
hall), granted by Robert Lauder <strong>of</strong> Quarrelwood, <strong>of</strong> some lands about the town <strong>of</strong><br />
Lander, to Thomas Borthwick, which wants a date; but, by the witnesses, it seems<br />
to have been granted in the reign <strong>of</strong> Robert I. Amongst the witnesses is Johannes<br />
Mautlant, Dominus de Tbirlestanc, and IVillislmus Mautlant. The next in succession<br />
was Thomas de Thirlestane, who gives, in free alms to the religious <strong>of</strong> Dryburgh,<br />
the teinds <strong>of</strong> his mill <strong>of</strong> Thirlestane. His successor was Robert, who is a witness<br />
in a charter by John Maxwell <strong>of</strong> Pencaitland, to the abbacy. <strong>of</strong> Dryburgh, in the<br />
reign <strong>of</strong> King David II. This Robert got a charter from that king <strong>of</strong> the lands <strong>of</strong><br />
Lethington. His son was John Mautlant <strong>of</strong> Thirlestane, who married Agnes, a daugh-<br />
