ALEXANBER LESLIE <strong>of</strong> Balquhain, argent, on a fesse azure, three buckle<br />

crest, a griffin's head erased, proper : motto, Grip fast. L. K.<br />

The first <strong>of</strong> this family was George, second son to Andrew dc Leslie, one <strong>of</strong> the<br />

progenitors <strong>of</strong> the Earl <strong>of</strong> Rothes, and his spouse Elisabeth, daughter to James<br />

Lord Douglas, in the reign <strong>of</strong> Robert the Bruce. He got from his father the lands<br />

<strong>of</strong> Balquhain, and married a daughter <strong>of</strong> Keith <strong>of</strong> Invcrugy. Sir William Leslie <strong>of</strong><br />

Balquhain, lineally descended o him, was made a knight at the coronation <strong>of</strong> K<br />

Charles I. and married Elisabeth Eraser, daughter to Lovat ; she bore Alexander,<br />

<strong>of</strong> whom the lairds <strong>of</strong> Balquhain, and William Leslie, the first <strong>of</strong> the House <strong>of</strong> Kin-<br />

craigie, who carried argent, on a fesse.between.two cross croslets fitchcd azure, three<br />

buckles or; crest, a griffin's head couped, proper, charged with a cross cro<br />

fitched argent ; motto, Firma spe.<br />

ALEXANDER LESLIE <strong>of</strong> Wardis, a younger son <strong>of</strong> William Leslie <strong>of</strong> Kincraigie.<br />

by his wife Agnes Irving, daughter to the laird <strong>of</strong> Drum, argent, on a bend ayutf,<br />

betwixt two holly leaves vert, (his maternal- figures)<br />

three buckles or : So matriculated<br />

in the Lyon Office.<br />

BALQUHAIN carries a fesse and not a bend, notwithstanding <strong>of</strong> which all the cadets<br />

<strong>of</strong> the family do not so. For, to change a fesse to a bend, and a bend to a<br />

fesse, has been an old practice <strong>of</strong> differencing younger sons with us, not only by<br />

this family, but by Stewarts Earls, <strong>of</strong> Monteith, <strong>of</strong> whom before, as also Scott <strong>of</strong><br />

Bevelaw.<br />

DAVID LESLIE, first laird <strong>of</strong> Pitcaple, was the eldest son <strong>of</strong> a second marriage <strong>of</strong><br />

William Leslie, first laird <strong>of</strong> Kincraigie, and his wife Eupham Lindsay, daughter<br />

to William Lindsay <strong>of</strong> Cairny, and carried argent, on a bend azure, betwixt two<br />

mullets gules, three buckles or ; as in Font's Manuscript.<br />

GEORGE LESLIE, sometime Bailie in Aberdeen, descended <strong>of</strong> a younger son <strong>of</strong><br />

Wardis, argent, on a bend embattled azure, three buckles or : motto, Deus providcbit.<br />

So matriculated in the Lyon Register; as also the following blazons <strong>of</strong> the<br />

name <strong>of</strong> Leslie i<br />

JOHN LESLIE <strong>of</strong> Colpnayshiels, descended <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Balquhain, argent, on a<br />

bend azure, three buckles or, within a bordure invected <strong>of</strong> the second, and charged<br />

with eight crescents <strong>of</strong> the first ; crest, a buckle issuing out <strong>of</strong> a crescent argent :<br />

motto, Conamine augeor. And JOHN LESLIE <strong>of</strong> Kininvie, another cadet <strong>of</strong> Balquhain,<br />

carries the same, but has his bordure indented, and not charged : motto, $>u
