WE James by the Grace <strong>of</strong> God King <strong>of</strong> Scots, considerand the faith and<br />

good servis <strong>of</strong> right traist friend, JOHN SCOTT <strong>of</strong> Thirlest'iine, quha command<br />

to our host at Suutra Edge, with threescore and ten launciers on ;ck,<br />

<strong>of</strong> his friends and followers. And hearid willing to gang with us into England,<br />

when all our nobles and others refused, he was ready to stake all at our bidding ;<br />

for the which cause, it is our will . And we do strictly command and charge our<br />

Lion Herauld and his deputis for the time beand, to give and to grant to the said<br />

John Scott, an border <strong>of</strong> tlower-de-lis-es, about his coat <strong>of</strong> arms, sick as in our<br />

royal banner, and alseswae an bundle <strong>of</strong> launces above his helmet, with thir word-,,<br />

Readdy, ay readily; that he and all his aftercummers may bruck the samen, a<br />

pledge and taiken <strong>of</strong> our good-will and kindness for his trew worthiness. And thir<br />

ROBERT SCOTT <strong>of</strong> Thirlestane, eldest son <strong>of</strong> the above John Scott <strong>of</strong> Thirle-<br />

stane, was warden-depute <strong>of</strong> the West Border, and married Margaret Scott, sister<br />

to the first Lord Buccleugh, and with her had two sons. The eldest sou, Sir<br />

Robert Scott <strong>of</strong> Thirlestane ; the second son, Walter Scott, father <strong>of</strong> Patrick Scott<br />

<strong>of</strong> Thirlestane, who married Isabel, daughter to Sir John Murray <strong>of</strong> Blackbarony ;<br />

and by her had several children.<br />

Their eldest son and successor, Sir FRANCIS SCOTT <strong>of</strong> Thirlestane, Knight and<br />

Baronet, being first made a Knight, and after honoured with the dignity <strong>of</strong><br />

baronet in the year 1666, he married Lady Henrietta Ker, daughter<br />

to William<br />

Earl <strong>of</strong> Lothian.<br />

Their son and successor Sir WILLIAM SCOTT <strong>of</strong> Thirlestane, Baronet, married<br />

first Elizabeth Napier, daughter to the Lady Napier, mother, by him, <strong>of</strong> the<br />

present Francis Lord Napier : Secondly, Sir William married Dame Jean Nisbet,<br />

only daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir John Nisbet <strong>of</strong> Dirleton, and widow <strong>of</strong> Sir William Scott <strong>of</strong><br />

Harden ; she died without issue.<br />

Sir WILLIAM SCOTT <strong>of</strong> Harden, as descended <strong>of</strong> Buccleugh, carried or, on a bend<br />

azure, a star <strong>of</strong> six points, betwixt two crescents <strong>of</strong> the field, and, in the sinister<br />

chief point, a rose gules, stalked and barbed vert, for a difference ; but <strong>of</strong> late, as<br />

descended <strong>of</strong> Scott <strong>of</strong> Sinton, he carries or, two mullets in chief, and a crescent<br />

in base azure ; supporters, two mermaids, proper, holding mirrors in their hands ;<br />

and for crest, a lady richly attired, holding in her right hand the sun, and in the<br />

as in the Plate <strong>of</strong><br />

left, a half moon ; with the motto, Reparabit cornua Ac hievements.<br />

Phabe,<br />

SCOTT <strong>of</strong> Highchester, eldest son <strong>of</strong> the Earl <strong>of</strong> Tarras, as descended <strong>of</strong> a second<br />

son <strong>of</strong> Harden, carries the first arms <strong>of</strong> Harden, and surmounts the rose, with a<br />

crescent ; crest, a stag tripping armed with ten tynes, all : proper motto, Pacein<br />

amrj. So matriculated iu the Lyon Register, with the following blazons.<br />

SCOTT <strong>of</strong> Thirleton carries the same coat <strong>of</strong> Harden, and charges the rose with<br />

a martlet ; with the crcit, and motto, as Highchester.<br />

SCOTT <strong>of</strong> Whiteslide, as descended <strong>of</strong> Sinton, or on a bend azure, a star betwixt<br />

two crescents <strong>of</strong> the first, and in chief, a broken lance, gules ; cre>t, a hand is-<br />

suing ovit <strong>of</strong> the torce, holding a broken spear as the former : motto, slmore<br />

patri(.<br />

HUGH SCOTT <strong>of</strong> Galashiels, as descended <strong>of</strong> Harden, Harden'.-, first arms, within<br />

a bordure sable, charged with six escalops argent ; crest, a lady from the waist<br />

richly attired, holding in her dexter hand, a rose proper : motto, Prudcntcr f/mo,<br />

as in the Plate <strong>of</strong> Achievements.<br />

WALTKR SCOTT <strong>of</strong> Raeburn, a third son <strong>of</strong> Harden, carries as Harden, with a<br />

suitable difference.<br />

SCOTT <strong>of</strong> Wool, the same with Harden, but surmounts the rose, with an an-<br />

nulet.<br />

SCOTT <strong>of</strong> Scotstarvet carries as Buccleugh, within a bordure ingrailed gules ;<br />

crest, a right hand holding an annulet, and therein a carbuncle proper ; with the<br />
