ried the foresaid blazon ; and for crest, an oak tree acorned, on u mount, proper ;<br />

with the motto, Tace. As in Font's Manuscript.<br />

ABERCROMBY <strong>of</strong> Biikenbog, since the extinction <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> Abercromby<br />

<strong>of</strong> that Ilk, is looked upon as chief <strong>of</strong> the name, and honoured with the title 01<br />

Knight Baronet. He carrries the principal coat <strong>of</strong> the name,<br />

as above.<br />

FRANCIS ABERCROMBY <strong>of</strong> Fittermer, son and heir <strong>of</strong> Alexander Abercromby <strong>of</strong><br />

Fetternier, son and heir <strong>of</strong> Hector Abercromby <strong>of</strong> Fitternier, second son <strong>of</strong> Alexander<br />

Abercromby <strong>of</strong> Birkenbog, argent, a cheveron ingrailed gules, betwixt three<br />

boars' heads erased azure ; crest, a cross croslet Jitcbe ; motto, In cnice salus. Lyon<br />

Register. He married the heiress <strong>of</strong> the Lord Semple, and was by King James VII<br />

; }d <strong>of</strong> July 1685, created a Lord <strong>of</strong> Parliament by the title <strong>of</strong> Glassford for life :<br />

Whereupon he carried quarterly, first and fourth argent, a cheveron cheque gules,<br />

and <strong>of</strong> the first, between three hunting-horns' sable, stringed <strong>of</strong> the second, for Semple<br />

; second and third Abeicromby, as before. The brothers <strong>of</strong> this Lord, by one<br />

mother, Jean Seaton, daughter <strong>of</strong> John Seat'on <strong>of</strong> Newark, are, John Abercromby<br />

<strong>of</strong> Aftbrsque, and Patrick Abercromby, Doctor <strong>of</strong> Medicine, who has ren-<br />

dered himself an ornament to his country, as well as to the family he sprung from,<br />

by a most exact and curious History <strong>of</strong> Scotland, rectifying the mistakes and er-<br />

rors <strong>of</strong> our former authors.<br />

ABERCROMBY <strong>of</strong> Glasshaugh, argent, a cheveron indented gules, accompanied<br />

with three boars' heads erased azure ; crest, a bee volant, proper : motto, Vive ut<br />

vivas.<br />

The surname <strong>of</strong> ARNOT, argent, a cheveron betwixt three stars gules. As in<br />

Balfour's Manuscript. The principal family <strong>of</strong> this name was Arnot <strong>of</strong> that Ilk in<br />

the shire <strong>of</strong> Fife. Michael Arnot dispones the lands <strong>of</strong> Cluny to the Monks <strong>of</strong><br />

Cluny, in the reign <strong>of</strong> Malcolm IV. as Sibb. Hist, <strong>of</strong> Fife, tc. In the Chronicle<br />

called Stemmataland Bruti, King Alexander II. sent Duncan Earl <strong>of</strong> Fife ambassador<br />

to Henry <strong>of</strong> England, accompanied with two Knights <strong>of</strong> Fife, viz. John de<br />

Morievill, and Malcolm tie Arnet, in the year 1240. MICHAEL ARNOT <strong>of</strong> that Ilk,<br />

was honoured with the title <strong>of</strong> Knight Baronet by King Charles I. which family is<br />

now extinct, and carried, as in Font's Manuscript, argent, a cheveron sable, between<br />

two mullets in chief, and a crescent in base gules.<br />

ARNOT <strong>of</strong> Fern, a cadet <strong>of</strong> Arnot <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, azure, a cheveron between three<br />

stars argent, and a crescent in chief <strong>of</strong> the last. Balfour's Manuscript.<br />

ARNOT <strong>of</strong> Balcormo, argent, a cheveron sable, between three mullets gules, all<br />

within a bordure indented <strong>of</strong> the second : motto, Speratum \3 completum. Lyou<br />

Register.<br />

And there,<br />

ARNOT <strong>of</strong> Eastrynd, descended <strong>of</strong> Balcormo, the same ; but charges the bordure<br />

with eight crescents <strong>of</strong> the first.<br />

WHITELAW <strong>of</strong> that Ilk, sable, a cheveron or, between three boars' heads erased<br />

argent, some make them couped, as Pont. Other books give for arms to some <strong>of</strong><br />

this name, ermine, on a chief gules, a boars' head couped, between two mullets or.<br />

As in Esplin's Illuminated Book. Severals <strong>of</strong> this name are mentioned in the Ragman-Roll.<br />

And in the reign <strong>of</strong> King James III. one Archibald Whitelaw was<br />

an eminent prelate and Secretary <strong>of</strong> State to that King.<br />

WILSON <strong>of</strong> Croglin, argent, a cheveron between -three mullets gules ; aliter,<br />

argent, a cheveron between two mullets in chief gules, and a crescent in base azure.<br />

WILSON <strong>of</strong> Plewlands, argent, a cheveron between three stars gules ; crest, a<br />

demi-lion <strong>of</strong> the last ; with the motto, Semper "vigilans. Lyon Register. And<br />

there also are the blazons <strong>of</strong> the following Wilsons :<br />

DAVID WILSON, Merchant in Edinburgh, argent, on a cheveron between three<br />

mullets gules, a talbot's head erased <strong>of</strong> the first, with the above motto.<br />

ARCHIBALD WILSON, Merchant in Queensferry, gules, a cheveron counter-embattled,<br />

between three mullets argent , crest, a talbot's head erased argent : Motto<br />

as before.<br />

GEORGE WILSON <strong>of</strong> Fingach, sable, a wolf salient or, in chief three stars argent ;<br />

crest, a wolf seiant or : motto, Exfrecta cuncta superne.<br />
