OF THE FESSE.<br />
the title <strong>of</strong> Earl <strong>of</strong> Crawford, about the year 1398, the pth year <strong>of</strong> the reign <strong>of</strong><br />
Robert III. and carried for their armorial bearing as before : Who, after they mar-<br />
ried a daughter and heiress <strong>of</strong> the Lord Abernethy, quartered the arms <strong>of</strong> Aber-<br />
nethy with their own, and that very early ; and have been in use to have for sup-<br />
in its<br />
porters, two lions seiant gules, armed or; crest, an ostrich, proper, holding<br />
beak a key ; and for motto, Endure fort.<br />
The other family, LINDSAY <strong>of</strong> the BYRES, was William de Lindsay Dominus de<br />
Byres; by the production <strong>of</strong> whose rights at the ranking <strong>of</strong> the nobility 1606, says<br />
Sir Robert Sibbald, he was found to have been a peer <strong>of</strong> the degree <strong>of</strong> a lord, by<br />
with her<br />
marrying Christian, daughter to Sir William Mure <strong>of</strong> Abercorn. He got<br />
Abercorn, and Dean, near to Edinburgh, the Mills, and several other lands ; and<br />
added to his arms, being gules, a fesse cheque, argent and azure, three stars in chief<br />
<strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>of</strong> his father-in-law ; supported by two griffins gules,<br />
and crested with a swan with its wings expanded,<br />
proper ; and for motto, Love but dread. His successor,<br />

John Lord Lindsay <strong>of</strong><br />
Byres, was created Earl <strong>of</strong> Lindsay 1633. Betwixt him and Lewis Earl <strong>of</strong> Crawford<br />
there was a tailzie, by means <strong>of</strong> which, when Earl Lewis was forfeited, Earl<br />
John succeeded to the titles, arms, and fortune <strong>of</strong> the Earl <strong>of</strong> Crawford.<br />
LINDSAY <strong>of</strong> Edziell, the male-heir <strong>of</strong> Lindsay <strong>of</strong> Crawford, carries the arms <strong>of</strong><br />
the Earl <strong>of</strong> Crawford as above, as the representative <strong>of</strong> that noble family, and was<br />
for some time earl.<br />
The first <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> LINDSAY <strong>of</strong> BALCARRAS, was Sir John, <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong><br />
Edziell, who was one <strong>of</strong> the Senators <strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong> Justice<br />
in the year 1595,<br />
and the next year Secretary <strong>of</strong> State to King James VI. in which <strong>of</strong>fice he died.<br />
and his grandson Colin was created Earl<br />
His son was created Lord BALCARRAS 1633 ;<br />
<strong>of</strong> Balcarras by King Charles II. They carry arms as the Earl <strong>of</strong> Crawford and<br />
Edziell ; within a bordure azure, charged with fourteen stars or ; supporters, two<br />
lions seiant gardant gules, with collars about their necks azure, charged with three<br />
stars or; for crest, a canopy seme <strong>of</strong> stars or, and fringed <strong>of</strong> the last, topped with a<br />
pennon gules ; and for motto, Astra, castra, numen, lumen.<br />
LINDSAY <strong>of</strong> Balgays in Angus, another younger son <strong>of</strong> Edzielly. who was Earl <strong>of</strong><br />
Crawford, carried the quartered arms <strong>of</strong> Lindsay, Crawford, and Abernethy, as his<br />

ALEXANDER LINDSAY, LORD SPYNIE, a younger son <strong>of</strong> David Earl <strong>of</strong> Crawford,<br />
and Edziell, who made a resignation <strong>of</strong> the earldom, carried his father's arms, with<br />
a label <strong>of</strong> three points argent: (some books have a crescent in place <strong>of</strong> the label),<br />
supporters, two lions seiant, armed and langued or; crest, an ostrich head erased,<br />
proper, with an horse-shoe or in its beak, and a label <strong>of</strong> three points about its<br />
neck, as have also the supporters. This family is now extinct : It was dignified<br />
with the title <strong>of</strong> lord on the I2th day <strong>of</strong> November 1590.<br />

The other cadets <strong>of</strong> the name <strong>of</strong> Lindsay, whose blazons I find in, our old books,<br />
.specially in Sir James Balfour's Books <strong>of</strong> Blazons, are these following :<br />
LINDSAY <strong>of</strong> Linbank, gules, a fesse cheque, argent and azure, betwixt two stars in<br />
~hief, and a hunting-horn in base <strong>of</strong> the second.<br />
LINDSAY <strong>of</strong> Dunrodis does accompany the fesse with three stars argent, two and<br />
one. Which family was represented by George Lindsay <strong>of</strong> Blackholm, whose<br />
arms, as recorded in the Lyon Register, are, gules, a fesse cheque, argent and: azure,<br />
and in chief a label <strong>of</strong> three points <strong>of</strong> the second ; crest, a withered branch <strong>of</strong><br />
oak sprouting forth green leaves, proper : motto, Mortua viv'escunt.<br />
DAVID LINDSAY, merchant in Edinburgh, descended <strong>of</strong> Dunrodis, as in the Lyon<br />
Register, carries gules, a fesse cheque, argent and azure, betwixt three garbs <strong>of</strong> the<br />
>econd, and banded <strong>of</strong> the first ; crest, a dexter hand holding & branch <strong>of</strong> olive,<br />
proper : motto, Mutuo amore cresco.<br />
LINDSAY <strong>of</strong> Corsbasket accompanies the fesse cheque with two. stars in chief, and<br />
in base a cinqucfoil argent.<br />
LINDSAY <strong>of</strong> Payetston accompanies the fesse cheque with three stars in chief,<br />
and in base a mascle argent. Which family is now represented by Lindsay <strong>of</strong><br />
Wormiston.<br />
LINDSAY <strong>of</strong> Kirkforther places the fesse cheque betwixt three stars in chief, aiid a<br />
hunting-horn in base argent.
