An active member <strong>of</strong> the AAFP since 1986, on the state level, he is a past-president <strong>of</strong> the Colorado<br />

<strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Physicians</strong> and has served on the Board <strong>of</strong> Directors <strong>of</strong> the Colorado AFP since<br />

1990. He has also served on several statewide boards, including the Colorado Medical Services<br />

Board, the board for the Colorado State Tobacco Education and Prevention Program and the<br />

Colorado Children’s Immunization Coalition, in which capacities he has been instrumental in<br />

helping to pass and implement legislation defining the patient-centered medical home in Colorado<br />

and improving access to care for the underserved.<br />

On the national level, in 1988 Dr. Cain co-founded the Tar Wars tobacco-free education program.<br />

Under his leadership, Tar Wars has grown to be one <strong>of</strong> the AAFP’s most respected outreach<br />

programs, and has reached more than 8.5 million children in all 50 states and in 14 countries. Dr.<br />

Cain’s work with Tar Wars has been recognized by the World Health Organization, which awarded<br />

him a Special Recognition Medical for Tobacco Control in 1990, and by the AAFP, which awarded<br />

him its Public Health Award in 1995. In 1996, following an accident and hospitalization, Dr. Cain<br />

has been walking with bilateral below the knee prosthetic legs. As a member <strong>of</strong> the board <strong>of</strong><br />

directors <strong>of</strong> the Amputee Coalition <strong>of</strong> America (ACA) since 1996, Dr. Cain started the ACA’s<br />

national prosthetic insurance fairness campaign, which has resulted in the passage <strong>of</strong> laws in twenty<br />

states requiring insurance coverage for prosthetics as well as the introduction <strong>of</strong> federal legislation in<br />

this area. In addition, Dr. Cain has also completed and taught nationally in adaptive sports and has<br />

introduced a new adaptive ski device—the ski-bike—to North America<br />

A member <strong>of</strong> the AAFP Board <strong>of</strong> Directors since 2008, on September 14, 2011, Dr. Cain was elected<br />

by the AAFP Congress <strong>of</strong> Delegates to serve as President-Elect <strong>of</strong> the AAFP.<br />

The Jeffrey J. Cain, M.D. Collection consists <strong>of</strong> documents and other materials relating to the history<br />

and development <strong>of</strong> the Tar Wars tobacco-free education program since its co-founding by Dr. Cain<br />

in 1988. Materials include organizational documents detailing the history <strong>of</strong> the program; lesson<br />

plans; tool kits; and miscellaneous Tar Wars-related souvenirs and other memorabilia.<br />

Lynn P. Carmichael, M.D., was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1928, but raised in the small town <strong>of</strong><br />

Mooresville, Indiana. He discovered his calling early in life, finding inspiration from his family’s<br />

physician, Dr. Kenneth Comer. After graduating from Indiana University, Carmichael attended the<br />

University <strong>of</strong> Louisville Medical School, earning his M.D. in 1952, after which he accepted an army<br />

internship at Brooke Army Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. During the Korean War, Carmichael<br />

served as a First Lieutenant and Regimental Surgeon in the Medical Company <strong>of</strong> the 17 th Infantry<br />
