age <strong>of</strong> 90.<br />

The Thomas L. Stern, M.D. Collection includes files from the numerous family medicine<br />

organizations, programs, and positions that Dr. Stern served, including within the AAFP,<br />

FHFA/AAFP Foundation, Residency Assistance Program (RAP), <strong>Family</strong> Practice Working Party,<br />

international family medicine efforts, and the Thomas L. Stern Lectureship. His <strong>collection</strong> also<br />

contains articles, papers, and speeches given by Dr. Stern; articles about Stern; correspondence;<br />

inscribed books; and materials removed from a scrapbook that Dr. Stern compiled. A significant part<br />

<strong>of</strong> his <strong>collection</strong> consists <strong>of</strong> seventeen boxes <strong>of</strong> scripts from the Marcus Welby, M.D. television<br />

show, dated 1969-1976.<br />

Originally a native <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania, Dr. Taylor attended Bucknell University and Temple University<br />

School <strong>of</strong> Medicine, earning his M.D. in 1961. He interned at the U.S. Public Health Service<br />

Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, and then served an additional two years with the U.S.P.H.S. From<br />

1964 to 1978 Dr. Taylor was in private family practice in New Paltz, New York. Following this, he<br />

joined the faculty <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong> and Community Medicine at Wake Forest University<br />

School <strong>of</strong> Medicine in North Carolina. Six years later, in 1984, he became the second chair <strong>of</strong><br />

Oregon Health & Science University’s Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong> Medicine, and served in this capacity<br />

until 1998, when he was named Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Emeritus, a position he holds currently. During his tenure<br />

as chair, the department increased from fifteen to forty primary faculty, established three clinical<br />

practice centers in Portland, and began a residency program in southern Oregon. Taylor joined the<br />

AAFP in 1965 and is a charter diplomate <strong>of</strong> the ABFM and a charter fellow <strong>of</strong> the AAFP. Among<br />

his many awards include two from the AAFP: the Thomas W. Johnson Award for Outstanding<br />

Contributions to <strong>Family</strong> Practice Education in 1998 and the John G. Walsh Award for Lifetime<br />

Contributions to <strong>Family</strong> Medicine in 2003, as well as the F. Marian Bishop Leadership Award from<br />

the STFM Foundation in 2007. Taylor has written widely on the specialty, and is the author <strong>of</strong> many<br />

articles and books on <strong>Family</strong> Medicine, including <strong>Family</strong> Medicine: Principles and Practice,<br />

Fundamentals <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong> Medicine, and The Manual <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong> Practice. His books have been<br />

translated into numerous languages and are considered seminal works in the specialty. He and his<br />

wife Anita currently reside in Portland, Oregon.<br />

Dr. Taylor’s <strong>collection</strong> consists <strong>of</strong> his curriculum vitae, c.1977; correspondence from 1977 to 1980<br />

relating to the 1 st edition <strong>of</strong> his book <strong>Family</strong> Medicine: Principles and Practice and his move from<br />
