HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE<br />

This Guide to the Collections for the Center for the History <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong> Medicine is arranged in four<br />

major sections:<br />

1). ARCHIVES COLLECTION<br />

The Archives Collection consists <strong>of</strong> the <strong>of</strong>ficial historical records <strong>of</strong> the major family medicine<br />

organizations, as well as the personal and pr<strong>of</strong>essional papers <strong>of</strong> individuals involved in the<br />

development and evolution <strong>of</strong> family medicine. Included in this <strong>collection</strong> are also photographs,<br />

slides, audio and videotapes, CDs, DVDs and other audio-visual materials.<br />

The Archives Collection is arranged in five major categories as follows:<br />

a). Records <strong>of</strong> Organizations—These records include the <strong>of</strong>ficial historical records and publications<br />

<strong>of</strong> major family medicine organizations and include the records <strong>of</strong> the <strong>American</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong><br />

<strong>Physicians</strong> (AAFP), the <strong>American</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Physicians</strong> Foundation (AAFP Foundation),<br />

the <strong>American</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong> Medicine (ABFM), the Association <strong>of</strong> Departments <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong><br />

Medicine (ADFM), the Association <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong> Medicine Residency Directors (AFMRD), the North<br />

<strong>American</strong> Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG), and the Society <strong>of</strong> Teachers <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong><br />

Medicine (STFM). These records are arranged in acid-free (blue-grey) archival boxes within the<br />

Center and are arranged according to the Center’s uniform subject headings list (see Appendix 1 for<br />

details).<br />

b). Records <strong>of</strong> Individuals—These include the personal and pr<strong>of</strong>essional papers <strong>of</strong> family<br />

physicians, educators and others involved in the development and evolution <strong>of</strong> the specialty <strong>of</strong> family<br />

medicine. This <strong>collection</strong> is arranged in acid-free (tan) archival boxes within the Center and is<br />

arranged according to the Center’s uniform subject headings list (see Appendix 1 for details).<br />

c.) Audio-Visual Materials—Audio-visual materials include CDs, DVDs, computer diskettes and<br />

flash drives, films, slides, audio cassettes, videotapes (1/2” VHS, 3/4,” Beta-Max and other) and<br />

micr<strong>of</strong>ilm relating to the history and evolution <strong>of</strong> the specialty <strong>of</strong> family medicine. All audio-visual<br />

materials are arranged according to the uniform subject headings list (see Appendix 1) and are stored<br />

in the Audio-Visual Room in the Center. The Audio-Visual Collections also include taped oral<br />

histories, including the “Voices from <strong>Family</strong> Medicine” Oral History Series, and extensive audio and<br />

videotape <strong>collection</strong>s.<br />

d). Oversized Materials- Oversized materials are composed <strong>of</strong> large or oversized blueprints,<br />

photographs, posters, and other materials that because <strong>of</strong> their size or bulk, are stored separately in<br />
