Minnesota AGP, serving as the chapter’s secretary for 5 years and as president in 1951. On the<br />

national level, he served as a member <strong>of</strong> the AAGP’s first Congress <strong>of</strong> Delegates, as a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />

AAGP’s Commission on Membership and Credentials, as treasurer <strong>of</strong> the AAGP, and from 1963 to<br />

1964 was AAGP president. Although forced to retire from medicine in 1965 due to illness, he<br />

continued in a second successful career as a director <strong>of</strong> three St. Paul banks and president <strong>of</strong> an<br />

insurance agency until 1973. Dr. Ritt died in St. Paul in 1997 at the age <strong>of</strong> 89.<br />

The Albert E. Ritt, M.D. Collection consists <strong>of</strong> newspaper and magazine articles, programs,<br />

pamphlets and reports which are primarily concerned with Dr. Ritt’s service on the <strong>Academy</strong> Board<br />

and his term as AAFP President, as well as material relating to his medical career as a whole.<br />

Born in 1926, Dr. Rutland attended both the University <strong>of</strong> Alabama and Duke University as an<br />

undergraduate, and graduated from the Tulane University School <strong>of</strong> Medicine in New Orleans in<br />

1949. Following completion <strong>of</strong> his internship in Birmingham, Alabama, he undertook residency<br />

training in California and Colorado, and then returned to Alabama to establish the McNease-Hodo<br />

Clinic in rural Fayette. While practicing in Fayette, he established the era as a rural preceptorship<br />

site both for the University <strong>of</strong> Alabama School <strong>of</strong> Medicine in Birmingham, and later for the College<br />

<strong>of</strong> Community Health Sciences in Tuscaloosa. In 1981, his work was recognized nationally when he<br />

was named the 1981 Good Housekeeping <strong>Family</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> the Year. A diplomate <strong>of</strong> the ABFP and a<br />

fellow and a life member <strong>of</strong> the AAFP, Dr. Rutland currently lives in Alabama.<br />

Dr. Rutland’s <strong>collection</strong> consists <strong>of</strong> newspaper and magazine articles and several photographs<br />

relating to his being awarded the 1981 <strong>Family</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> the Year Award. In addition, the <strong>collection</strong><br />

also holds 1 photocopied clipping book which was compiled in November 1981 concerning Dr.<br />

Rutland as “<strong>Family</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> the Year,” and a second photocopied scrapbook compiled by his <strong>of</strong>fice<br />

staff entitled “Dr. Rutland 1957-1997: From Patients-Compiled by Brenda & Sally.”<br />

Rafael C. Sanchez, M.D. was born July 18, 1919, in Tampa, Florida. He obtained premedical<br />

training from Loyola University in Louisiana and medical training from Louisiana State University<br />

School <strong>of</strong> Medicine, earning his M.D. in 1950. Sanchez remained in Louisiana for his internship at<br />

the U.S. Marine Hospital in New Orleans. He served an extended period in the Army, eleven years,<br />
