Dr. Osborne was assistant dean for Continuing Medical Education and pr<strong>of</strong>essor, Department <strong>of</strong><br />

Medical Education at Southern Illinois University School <strong>of</strong> Medicine in Springfield, Illinois. He<br />

researched and published articles on a variety <strong>of</strong> topics relating to health-related topics, including the<br />

impact <strong>of</strong> continuing medical education and the evaluation <strong>of</strong> clinical competence.<br />

Dr. Osborne’s <strong>collection</strong> consists <strong>of</strong> an Award <strong>of</strong> Merit from the AAFP to Dr. Osborne “For his<br />

significant contribution as Project Director <strong>of</strong> the Joint Committee on Quality Assurance in its<br />

development <strong>of</strong> methodology for the evaluation <strong>of</strong> ambulatory child health care.”<br />

Born in 1947 in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, Dr. Ostergaard received a B.A. degree in natural sciences<br />

and psychology from the University <strong>of</strong> North Dakota in 1969, and earned an M.D. degree from the<br />

University <strong>of</strong> Texas Southwestern School <strong>of</strong> Medicine in Dallas in 1973. In addition to clinical<br />

practice as a medical <strong>of</strong>ficer with the United States Public Health Service in New Mexico, Dr.<br />

Ostergaard also served as director <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Family</strong> Medicine Residency in Duluth and was a faculty<br />

member <strong>of</strong> the University <strong>of</strong> Minnesota School <strong>of</strong> Medicine. From 1983 to 1999, he served as<br />

AAFP vice president for Education and Scientific Activities, and from 1999 to 2008 served as AAFP<br />

vice president for International and Interpr<strong>of</strong>essional Activities. In 2008, Dr. Ostergaard became<br />

AAFP vice president for Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Activities, and in 2011 was named vice president for Health <strong>of</strong><br />

the Public and Interpr<strong>of</strong>essional Activities, which <strong>of</strong>fice he presently holds. As vice president for<br />

Health <strong>of</strong> the Public and Interpr<strong>of</strong>essional Activities, he has oversight responsibilities for the public<br />

health, scientific and research activities <strong>of</strong> the AAFP as well as the AAFP’s relationships with other<br />

medical organizations in the United States and abroad. Dr. Ostergaard is a member <strong>of</strong> the World<br />

Organization <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong> Doctors (WONCA) Executive Committee by virtue <strong>of</strong> his position as chair<br />

<strong>of</strong> its Bylaws Committee. In 1998, he was awarded honorary life membership in WONCA. Among<br />

his awards are the 2000 Gabriel Smilkstein Memorial Award <strong>of</strong> the Society <strong>of</strong> Teachers <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong><br />
