United States, and took part as a physician in several notable events, particularly the Great Railway<br />
Strike <strong>of</strong> 1877 and Gen. George Crook’s famous investigation <strong>of</strong> the Apache country while<br />
commanding the Department <strong>of</strong> Arizona in 1882. In addition, Dr. Skinner was for a brief time<br />
custodian <strong>of</strong> the Native <strong>American</strong>s <strong>of</strong> Geronimo’s group while they were imprisoned at Fort Marion,<br />
Florida in 1875. After retiring from the Army in 1893, Dr. Skinner moved to Washington, D.C.,<br />
where he served as superintendent <strong>of</strong> the Columbia Hospital for Women. With the outbreak <strong>of</strong> World<br />
War I, Dr. Skinner was recalled to active service, and served as head <strong>of</strong> the U.S. Army Dispensary in<br />
Washington. In 1930, he retired from the Army for the second time with the rank <strong>of</strong> lieutenant<br />
colonel. He died in Washington, D.C. at the age <strong>of</strong> 87 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery<br />
alongside his wife Kathleen Bayly Skinner, who was herself the daughter <strong>of</strong> another prominent 19 th<br />
Century physician, Dr. Alexander Hamilton Bayly.<br />
The John O. Skinner, M.D. Collection consists <strong>of</strong> a photocopy <strong>of</strong> Dr. Skinner’s complete military<br />
service records from the National Archives in Washington from 1866 to 1893, and includes an<br />
Appointments, Promotions and Commissions (APC) file; Application for Employment as a Contract<br />
Surgeon, U.S. Army; and Personnel Reports, Orders and Receipts. The <strong>collection</strong> also contains<br />
photocopied material giving background information on the Modoc War, Indian Wars, Dr. Skinner’s<br />
Medal <strong>of</strong> Honor, and other subjects relating to his military career, as well as genealogy and education<br />
records, correspondence, publications, and extracts relating to his memberships in various medical,<br />
military and other organizations.<br />

Walter Jack Stelmach, M.D. was born in Kansas City, Kansas in 1926. A 1953 graduate <strong>of</strong> the<br />
University <strong>of</strong> Kansas School <strong>of</strong> Medicine, Dr. Stelmach practiced <strong>Family</strong> Medicine in Kansas City,<br />
Missouri, for 20 years. From 1974 to 1993, he also led the Goppert <strong>Family</strong> Care Center as director<br />
<strong>of</strong> the <strong>Family</strong> Practice Residency Program based at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Kansas City.<br />
Within the <strong>Academy</strong>, Dr. Stelmach has served in a variety <strong>of</strong> leadership positions, including stints as<br />
president <strong>of</strong> the Kansas City <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Physicians</strong> (1973-1974), chairman <strong>of</strong> the AAFP<br />
Commission on Education (1974-1976), member and later chairman <strong>of</strong> the AAFP Board <strong>of</strong> Directors<br />
(1974-1977), and president <strong>of</strong> the AAFP (1978-1979). He also served as president <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Family</strong><br />
Health Foundation <strong>of</strong> America (now the AAFP Foundation) from 1980 to 1986, and as president <strong>of</strong><br />
the <strong>American</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong> Practice (now the ABFM) from 1983 to 1984.<br />
The W. Jack Stelmach, M.D. Collection consists <strong>of</strong> 6 boxes <strong>of</strong> scrapbook materials compiled by Dr.<br />
Stelmach (in archival sleeves) which relate to his early life and career and service in <strong>Family</strong><br />
Medicine, and includes photographs, letters, speeches, publications and other materials arranged<br />
chronologically, from 1938 to 2005.<br />
