Miller was also a longtime member <strong>of</strong> the <strong>American</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Physicians</strong> and the<br />

<strong>American</strong> Medical Association.<br />

The Roland E. Miller, M.D. Collection includes several newspaper clippings about Dr. Miller, a<br />

1929 Hamot Hospital Association Annual Report, some correspondence, a 1969 issue <strong>of</strong> Hamot<br />

Happenings. There are also numerous medical instruments and artifacts in his <strong>collection</strong>, including a<br />

microscope, doctor’s bag, tonometers, syringes, and a stereoscope. The library items in this<br />

<strong>collection</strong> include a 1977 edition <strong>of</strong> Rakel’s Principles <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong> Medicine, a very fragile 1888<br />

edition <strong>of</strong> Dr. Chase’s Third, Last and Complete Receipt Book and Household Physician, or<br />

Practical Knowledge for the People, and several volumes <strong>of</strong> The CIBA Collection <strong>of</strong> Medical<br />

Illustrations.<br />

Fitzhugh Mullan, M.D. is presently the Murdock Head Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Medicine and Health Policy and<br />

a pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Pediatrics at the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He is also an<br />

attending physician at Children’s National Medical Center and a staff physician at the Upper<br />

Cardozo Community Health Center, both in Washington, and served as an assistant surgeon general<br />

in the U.S. Public Health Service from 1991 to 1996. Dr. Mullan is the author <strong>of</strong> several well-known<br />

works on the U.S. health care system, including Big Doctoring in America: Pr<strong>of</strong>iles in Primary Care<br />

(2002); Plagues and Politics: The Story <strong>of</strong> the United States Public Health Service (1989); Vital<br />

Signs: A Young Physician’s Struggle with Cancer (1983); and White Coat, Clenched Fist: The<br />

Political Education <strong>of</strong> an <strong>American</strong> Physician (1976).<br />

The Fitzhugh Mullan, M.D. Collection contains a series <strong>of</strong> transcribed oral histories conducted<br />

between 1996-2001 by Dr. Mullan in cooperation with the People-to-People Health Foundation as<br />

part <strong>of</strong> an oral history on generalist medical practice in the United States. The <strong>collection</strong> <strong>of</strong> these<br />

oral histories were photocopied and donated to the Center from the Primary Care Oral History<br />

Collection at National Library <strong>of</strong> Medicine (NLM) with permission <strong>of</strong> Dr. Mullan and contain the<br />

transcribed oral histories <strong>of</strong> the following individuals (with Finding Aid also included):<br />
