Medicine, serving as its founding chair. He also served as an associate and later acting dean <strong>of</strong> the<br />

University’s School <strong>of</strong> Medicine. In 1988, he returned to clinical practice part-time in Anacortes,<br />

Washington, while continuing to teach at the university. An active member <strong>of</strong> several <strong>Family</strong><br />

Medicine organizations, Dr. Phillips served as president <strong>of</strong> the Society <strong>of</strong> Teachers <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong><br />

Medicine (STFM) from 1978 to 1979 and received the Society’s Certificate <strong>of</strong> Excellence Award in<br />

1981. In 1991, Dr. Phillips was appointed as a member <strong>of</strong> the Agency for Health Care Policy and<br />

Research (AHCPR) National Advisory Council for Health Care Policy, Research and Evaluation. He<br />

retired in May <strong>of</strong> 1994.<br />

The Theodore J. Phillips, M.D. Collection consists <strong>of</strong> a <strong>collection</strong> <strong>of</strong> Dr. Phillips’ published articles<br />

from 1969 to 1995, including a copy <strong>of</strong> his March 1988 manuscript <strong>of</strong> “<strong>Family</strong> Medicine: Twenty-<br />

Five Years <strong>of</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Washington History” and a draft <strong>of</strong> the Blanchard Memorial Lecture he<br />

delivered at the STFM meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana on May 7, 1995 entitled “Community, the<br />

Defining Basis <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong> Practice: Opportunities for Nurturing our Communities Today.”<br />

Nicholas J. Pisacano, M.D., was born on June 6, 1924 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but was raised<br />

five miles away in Merchantville, New Jersey. Pisacano began his education in 1941 at Western<br />

Maryland College but was interrupted a year later by World War II. He served in the United States<br />

Army during the war from 1942 to 1946. Between 1946 and 1947 Pisacano finished his B.A. and<br />

continued on to medical school at Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia. After four years <strong>of</strong><br />

training, Pisacano earned his M.D. in 1951 and completed his internship and residency at Stamford<br />

Hospital in Connecticut between 1951 and 1953. He opened a rural practice straight out <strong>of</strong> residency<br />

in South Royalton, Vermont; he operated this practice until 1955. Between 1955 and 1962, he<br />

maintained a city practice in Philadelphia. He then decided to enter the academic scene at the<br />

University <strong>of</strong> Kentucky, first as the Director <strong>of</strong> Continuing Medical Education (1962-1968) and then<br />

as Assistant Dean <strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong> Arts and Sciences (1966-1972). During his initial time in<br />

Lexington, Dr. Pisacano also became the founding secretary <strong>of</strong> the <strong>American</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong><br />

Practice, established in 1969, which established <strong>Family</strong> Practice (ABFP) as an <strong>of</strong>ficial specialty, the<br />

20 th overall. He remained the Executive Director and Secretary for the first twenty years <strong>of</strong> the board<br />

and as an Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor at UK until his untimely death in 1990. In 2005, the ABFP was<br />

renamed the <strong>American</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong> Medicine (ABFM). Dr. Pisacano was also a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Kentucky Medical Association, Southern Medical Association, <strong>American</strong> Medical Association, and<br />

<strong>American</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Physicians</strong>. He also received the Thomas W. Johnson Award in 1977<br />

for excellence in medical education.<br />

The Nicholas J. Pisacano, M.D. Collection consists <strong>of</strong> a booklet <strong>of</strong> remembrance for the<br />

establishment <strong>of</strong> the Nicholas J. Pisacano Endowed Chair in <strong>Family</strong> Practice at the University <strong>of</strong><br />
