photocopied newspaper articles pertaining to him. The original <strong>of</strong> the copied items are held by the<br />

<strong>American</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong> Medicine in Lexington, Kentucky.<br />

Rex A. Pittenger, M.D. was born in 1919, and received his M.D. from the University <strong>of</strong> Minnesota<br />

School <strong>of</strong> Medicine in 1948. He served as a clinical associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Psychiatry at the<br />

University <strong>of</strong> Pittsburgh Medical School, and as head <strong>of</strong> the Staunton Clinic.<br />

Dr. Pittenger’s <strong>collection</strong> consists <strong>of</strong> publications and materials relating to Balint Seminars for<br />

<strong>Family</strong> <strong>Physicians</strong> which were conducted at the University <strong>of</strong> Pittsburgh School <strong>of</strong> Medicine during<br />

the period 1968-1970: Bibliography- Research in General Practice (Rev. ed.) by Lucy Zabarenko<br />

and Etta Zwell (1968); Training for <strong>Family</strong> Practice: A Selected Bibliography by Mary Etta Zwell<br />

Post, S. Perry, M.D. (1915-2007)<br />

S. Perry Post M.D. was born February 24, 1915, in San Antonio, Texas, where he would spend most<br />

<strong>of</strong> his life. He attended St. Mary’s University for his undergraduate training, and earned his M.D.<br />

from the University <strong>of</strong> Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston in 1938. During World War II,<br />

Post served in the Army Medical Corps for a five year period, 1941 to 1946, ascending as high as the<br />

rank <strong>of</strong> Major. Prior to his military service, Post practiced family medicine for a period in Boerne,<br />

Texas and returned to family practice, serving the Jefferson area <strong>of</strong> San Antonio, after the war. Post<br />

was a charter member <strong>of</strong> the AAGP in 1948 and served as president <strong>of</strong> the Alamo Chapter <strong>of</strong> the<br />

AAGP in 1953. Post was twice named the Physician <strong>of</strong> the Year by the Alamo Chapter <strong>of</strong> the Texas<br />

<strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Physicians</strong> (TAFP). Soon, however, he turned his focus to other endeavors in<br />

family medicine. In 1972, Post was elected President <strong>of</strong> the Bexar County Medical Society and one<br />

year later he joined the faculty <strong>of</strong> the University <strong>of</strong> Texas Health Science Center <strong>of</strong> San Antonio.<br />

There he served as a pr<strong>of</strong>essor in the Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong> Practice and as Director <strong>of</strong> the Student<br />

Health Center. He was named an AAFP Fellow in 1973. In 1984, Dr. Post retired but remained<br />

active in medicine working as Clinic Director for family planning clinics on the south and east sides<br />

<strong>of</strong> San Antonio until 1998. The TAFP awarded Post with the title “physician emeritus” in 1994. He<br />
