first in the U.S. Army between 1940 and 1946 and as Director <strong>of</strong> Convalescent Reconditioning<br />

Program from 1943 to 1946. From 1946 to 1950 Sanchez served in the A.U.S. Medical<br />

Administrative Corps as a Reserve Major and from 1950 to 1951 as an assistant surgeon in the U.S.<br />

Public Health Service. He first joined the AAGP and Louisiana <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> General Practice<br />

(LAGP) in 1955, and also belonged to the <strong>American</strong> Medical Association (AMA) and Louisiana<br />

State Medical Society (LSMS). In 1951, Sanchez went to work for Mercy Hospital under the title <strong>of</strong><br />

Senior Attending Staff and held that position until 1970. That year he left for East Jefferson General<br />

Hospital where he served under the same post until 1973. Sanchez then entered the academic world<br />

at LSU School <strong>of</strong> Medicine where he held numerous positions simultaneously: Director <strong>of</strong> Division<br />

<strong>of</strong> Continuing Medical Education, Director <strong>of</strong> Division <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong> Medicine, Director <strong>of</strong><br />

Development in Educational Renewal, Associate Dean for Continuing Medical Education, and<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Medicine. While at LSU, Sanchez created a model for the continuing education program<br />

and developed a family practice preceptorship. By 1978 he had relocated to Bogalusa, Louisiana to<br />

serve as the director <strong>of</strong> LSU’s family practice residency program. That same year he also served as<br />

the President <strong>of</strong> LAFP and was awarded the Thomas W. Johnson Award for outstanding<br />

contributions to family practice education. During 1978 he was also serving his third <strong>of</strong> four years as<br />

Director <strong>of</strong> the <strong>American</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong> Practice (1976-1979.) Over the next decade Sanchez<br />

worked in both Kentucky and North Carolina holding various positions related to medical education:<br />

council chairman for the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education between 1983 and<br />

1984 (KY), chairman <strong>of</strong> the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education Accreditation<br />

Review Committee in 1987 (NC), Associate Executive Director <strong>of</strong> the ABFP (KY) and pr<strong>of</strong>essor at<br />

Brody School <strong>of</strong> Medicine (BSOM) on the campus <strong>of</strong> East Carolina University (ECU). In 1993,<br />

Sanchez became the Medical Director <strong>of</strong> the Network <strong>of</strong> Continuing Medical Education, a position<br />

he held until 2005. He died in 2008.<br />

The Rafael C. Sanchez, M.D. Collection includes newspaper and magazine articles by or about Dr.<br />

Sanchez; brochures and programs from meetings and conferences; materials about RAP<br />

consultations that Sanchez conducted; articles regarding his time at East Carolina University; awards<br />

and honors Sanchez received; materials pertaining to the history and anniversaries <strong>of</strong> the ABFP; and<br />

some rare books and publications that were part <strong>of</strong> Dr. Sanchez’s personal <strong>collection</strong> (a special<br />

interest <strong>of</strong> his). Two notable items in the <strong>collection</strong>: (1) A report on Preferences <strong>of</strong> <strong>Physicians</strong><br />

Regarding Postgraduate Medical Education, Louisiana, May-June 1964 (a contract done for HEW);<br />

and (2) A letter from a male patient in 1967 to Sanchez, thanking him for his conduct during the<br />

patient’s selective service qualification exam. This file also includes Sanchez’s reply to the patient.<br />

M. Eileen Schmitt, M.D. was born in 1943. After graduating from high school in Philadelphia, she<br />

joined the Catholic Gray Sisters <strong>of</strong> the Sacred Heart, and later taught high school math and science,<br />
