The Kenneth F. Kessel, M.D. Collection consists <strong>of</strong> various materials documenting the history and<br />

development <strong>of</strong> the MacNeal <strong>Family</strong> Practice Residency Program, including the 12 th edition <strong>of</strong> the<br />

MacNeal <strong>Family</strong> Medicine Curriculum (1987); a 1975-1976 MacNeal Residencies in <strong>Family</strong> Practice<br />

Manual; a 1981 Alcoholism Treatment Center Residency Training Manual; two volumes <strong>of</strong> the<br />

MacNeal <strong>Family</strong> Practice Syllabus (1975-1976); and several articles by Dr. Kessel dating from 1974<br />

and 1975, as well as an article entitled “The Origin <strong>of</strong> the First <strong>Family</strong> Practice Residency in the<br />

State <strong>of</strong> Illinois”. Also included in the <strong>collection</strong> is a complete boxed set <strong>of</strong> “Criteria Cards” from the<br />

program from the period 1970 to 1987.<br />

Kolb, Weldon G., M.D. (1919-1995)<br />

Born in 1919 in Texas, Weldon Garrett Kolb, M.D. graduated from the University <strong>of</strong> Texas Medical<br />

Branch in Galveston in 1941. After completing his internship at the John Sealy Hospital in<br />

Galveston, he established a general practice as part <strong>of</strong> the Medical & Surgical Clinic Associates in<br />

LaMarque, Texas in 1945, where he was in private practice until 1991. A charter member <strong>of</strong> the<br />

AAGP in 1947, he served as president <strong>of</strong> the Texas <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Physicians</strong> from 1972 to<br />

1973, as a member <strong>of</strong> the AAFP Commission on Public Health and Scientific Affairs from 1976 to<br />

1982, and as president and chairman <strong>of</strong> the Texas AFP Foundation for nine years. In 1983, he was<br />

honored by being named the Texas <strong>Family</strong> Physician <strong>of</strong> the Year by his colleagues in the Texas AFP<br />

and in 1992 the Weldon G. Kolb, M.D. Pavilion was named in his honor at the Mainland Center<br />

Hospital in Texas City. Dr. Kolb retired in 1991 and died in 1995 in Galveston at the age <strong>of</strong> 75.<br />

The Weldon G. Kolb, M.D. Collection consists <strong>of</strong> Dr. Kolb’s correspondence files relating to his<br />

membership and service in the Texas AFP from 1951 to 1988; files relating to his participation in<br />

the Texas AFP Foundation from 1988 to 1995; newspaper and other publications clippings relating<br />

to his life and career; two photocopied scrapbooks with photographs covering the period 1971-1973;<br />

awards and certificates files, including files on the 1983 Texas <strong>Family</strong> Physician <strong>of</strong> the Year Award,<br />

and the dedication <strong>of</strong> the Weldon G. Kolb Pavilion; files relating to travel, pr<strong>of</strong>essional meetings,<br />

and seminars; position papers and speeches; files relating to his involvement in the Texas Medical<br />

Association, Council for Medical Education & Hospitals, ABFP and AAFP Commission on Public<br />

Health & Scientific Affairs; and a file relating to his retirement in 1991.<br />
