earning an M.S. degree from New York State University in Buffalo. In 1980, she graduated from the<br />

Medical College <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania with her M.D., and in 1983 completed her residency at the<br />

Wilmington Medical Center (now the Christiana Care Health System) in Wilmington, Delaware.<br />

That same year, she opened a family practice in Wilmington and joined the staff <strong>of</strong> the St. Francis<br />

Hospital in that same city. In 1990 she became an <strong>of</strong>ficer <strong>of</strong> the hospital’s medical staff and served as<br />

its president from 1994 to 1996. In 1997, she was named vice president for Medical Management,<br />

and in 1999 was named as President <strong>of</strong> St. Francis. An active member <strong>of</strong> the AAFP since 1983, she<br />

also served as a delegate from the Delaware AFP to the AAFP Congress <strong>of</strong> Delegates from 1998 to<br />

1999.<br />

The M. Eileen Schmitt, M.D. Collection consists <strong>of</strong> compiled newspaper, newsletter and magazine<br />

articles, as well as correspondence relating to her medical career and awards.<br />

Shackelford, R. H., M.D. (1925- )<br />

R. H. (Robert H.) Shackelford, M.D., a native <strong>of</strong> Kinston, North Carolina, graduated with a B.S.<br />

degree from Wake Forest in 1945, and an M.D. from the Bowman Gray School <strong>of</strong> Medicine at Wake<br />

Forest in 1947. After completing his internship at St. Louis City Hospital in 1949, Dr. Shackelford<br />

served as a battalion surgeon in the U.S. Army in Korea during the Korean War. Following this, he<br />

returned to North Carolina, where he established a general practice in the town <strong>of</strong> Mount Olive. He<br />

also became active in a variety <strong>of</strong> local, state and national medical organizations. From 1964 to 1965,<br />

he served as the president <strong>of</strong> the North Carolina <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Physicians</strong>. On the national<br />

level, he served as vice speaker (1976-1979) and speaker (1979-1982) <strong>of</strong> the AAFP Congress <strong>of</strong><br />

Delegates, as well as chairman <strong>of</strong> the AAFP’s Reference Committee on Education (1973); Rules<br />

Committee (1975); and Committee on Members’ AAFP Insurance and Financial Services (1978-<br />

1979); and as an AAFP delegate to the <strong>American</strong> Medical Association (AMA) House <strong>of</strong> Delegates<br />

(1986-1987).<br />

The R.H. Shackelford, M.D. Collection consists <strong>of</strong> Dr. Shackelford’s reports on the Annual Meetings<br />

<strong>of</strong> the AMA House <strong>of</strong> Delegates (1986-1987); and correspondence and memoranda relating to his<br />

service with the AAFP from 1978 to 1986.<br />

Maynard I. Shapiro, M.D., <strong>of</strong> Chicago, Illinois, was born in 1914 in Chicago. He earned both his<br />

B.S. (1937) and his M.D. (1940) from the University <strong>of</strong> Illinois. He completed an internship and<br />
