memoirs and several histories about Mechanicsville and the local region.<br />
The J. Roy Guyther, M.D. Collection contains files related to his practice and career, including his<br />
designation as <strong>Family</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> the Year <strong>of</strong> 1979, as well as articles and news releases about him<br />
and correspondence from patients and colleagues. In addition, there are files related to Project<br />
MORE, a student preceptorship program sponsored by the AAGP in the early 1960s. Also included<br />
are files related to the shortage <strong>of</strong> family doctors in Maryland and health manpower training in that<br />
state.<br />

Alvin J. Haley, M.D., was born November 2, 1926, in Hartford City, Indiana. After high school he<br />
entered the United States Naval Reserve and served as a Seaman First Class from 1945-1946. He<br />
earned his B.S. in 1950 from Indiana University and his M.D. in 1953 from Indiana University<br />
School <strong>of</strong> Medicine. Haley then completed a rotating internship, also in Indiana, at Lutheran Hospital<br />
in Fort Wayne between 1953 and 1954. Haley opened his Private Practice in <strong>Family</strong> Medicine, his<br />
first and only practice, in Fort Wayne in 1954 and continued in this stead for twenty-six years. Haley<br />
joined the <strong>American</strong> Medical Association (AMA) that same year and became a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />
<strong>American</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Physicians</strong> (AAFP) the following year in 1955. In 1969, Haley<br />
became President <strong>of</strong> the Indiana chapter (IAFP) after already serving as president <strong>of</strong> the Indiana State<br />
Medical Association (ISMA). Four years later, Haley ventured into the academic community, while<br />
maintaining his practice, serving as a Clinical Instructor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong> Medicine and an Assistant<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong> Medicine at his alma mater, the Indiana University School <strong>of</strong> Medicine. He<br />
served in these positions until 1980, the same year he left his practice. In 1980, Haley became the<br />
Clinical Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong> Medicine and held this post until 1987 when he was<br />
promoted again, this time to Clinical Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong> Medicine. He had also been serving as the<br />
Director <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong> Practice Education at Methodist Hospital since 1980; he served in this stead until<br />
1997. Moreover, Haley found time to also serve on the AAFP Board <strong>of</strong> Directors and to act as<br />
chairman <strong>of</strong> the AAFP Commission on Education between 1982 and 1985. Haley has since retired,<br />
but holds the honorary title <strong>of</strong> Emeritus Clinical Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Family</strong> Medicine for the Indiana<br />
University School <strong>of</strong> Medicine.<br />
