Patterns <strong>of</strong> kidnapping also appear to be dynamic.
In 2007 the global total <strong>of</strong> recorded kidnap for
ransom cases increased slightly to 1,425. Although
half <strong>of</strong> all reported cases occurred in Latin America,
there appears to be a growing tendency for
kidnapping in Asia and Africa (see Figure 7.3). It
appears that the overall decline in Latin America
can also be attributed to a general decline in kidnappings
in Colombia, despite moderate increases
in Mexico and Venezuela. <strong>The</strong> surge <strong>of</strong> kidnapping
in Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Iraq, and Nigeria
accounts for the growth in other regions. <strong>The</strong> top
ten countries for kidnap for ransom cases in 2007
were Mexico, Venezuela, Nigeria, Pakistan, Colombia,
India, Haiti, Afghanistan, Brazil, and Iraq.
